New vs. Old US

The newest UltraStingers have the head threads on the outside of the body, while the older ones have the threads inside of the body.

There are also some differences in the reflectors. I have an "old" Us serial number in the 17000 range that was a demo when it first came out. I bought the demo off of the LEO supply store and got new battery bulb and chargers. They just switched out the bulb and batt in the light. I wanted the older one because it had the orange peel reflector like the surefire p series lamps. Makes for a lot smoother beam... I know that the others with a more smooth reflector are a bit brighter but i could not tell a sig. difference

Bushman,
I don't think that that smooth reflectors actually make a torch brighter - but they will make a lamp project ~30% further.

I believe that "orange-peel" reflectors just make a smoother beam, by "averaging" out shadows/imperfections, and breaking up the filament's own shape and reflection.
But then you lose the extra 30% projection ......

how do the reflectors that are partially "orange-peeled" effect the throw/smoothness?

Umm, er, well: I'm not sure ......

I assume that's a design compromise to try to achieve both qualities, range and purity. At a guess, the part nearer the lamp would have to be "stochastic" (that is, "random"/orange-peel), and the upper part smooth.

I can't remember which torches have "mixed" reflectors - anyone got one to comment ?

Jahn

I have a "mixed" reflector and there are artifacts, rings and shadows but not to a degree that I say "Yech". Also I keep mine in tight focus so all I get is a hotspot that is "clean".
I very much like my US and it is the first grab when I need to check out a noise in the middle of the night.

Jahn. It's about damn time you come back to the warm fuzzy fold of CPF more often.

Yea I second that Jahn!!! I did not mean brighter I meant longer throw... Both lights put out the same amount of light.

Aw shucks guys

Sunspot, you are so right !! (But then, I always agree with you about everything ... )
On the mixed reflector issue, it seems that you end up with a compromised beam from a compromise design.

Bushman, I was sure that's what you really meant.

I'm going to try your anodize removal method on a GMG Ultra-Goverment model. The reflector is anodized for crip's sake.
btw, just get up? ;-)

My US has the treads on the outside however I just bought a new one for a guy at work and his reflector is different. They are both two stage but his is shiner at the top than mine is?
