News : Lumileds and Nichia Sign Cross-Licensing Agreement for LED Technology

Well...cross licensing doesn't mean that they are the same company, just that they agree for equal access to each other's technology.

So...since they will still compete with each other (unless prohibited by the terms of the agreement), you should see each trying to out do the other.

They must both have something the other wants, and they both want the equivalent of a 60 watt bulb.

I hope they don't get into the Mess that AMD and Intel got into

AMD started copying stuff from Intel, and Intel didn't like anything that AMD made - and then Intel took AMD to court

If you can't beat them...

I imagine Lumileds will save on their phosphor costs whereas Nichia will get a leg up on die tricks.

I believe Cree and Nichia were in a law suit not too long ago re: patent disputes or infringement. I take this as a hopeful sign that technology won't take a back seat to legal concerns.

Is this history repating itself in the lighting world?
I believe that Edison and Swan, two rival manufacturers of filament light bulbs, each founded by a person who claimed that they had invemnted the light bulb, joined forces to form the Ediswan company. Each were able to manufacture bulbs under a common agreement. The Ediswan company also used its expertise in bulbmaking to produce thermionic valves for the radio industry. Valves and bulbs use many similar m
anufacturing processes, so it was a logical step forward.
So, we see the same sort of agreement between the two biggest rivals in the solid state lighting business... Nichia and Lumileds.
Probably on thier joint venture they could end up churning out microprocessors for optical computers!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Quite usually these law suits are setled with cross-licensing the patents... patents are like currency...
