I just have to post these... I didn't know these nice of a lights were around for so little. :grin2:

I especially like the 9" version, but some may not feel they have the room and may only want the 7".

I intend to mount some of these on my boat.. as soon as I can find an appropriate mount to go onto my 7/8" console bar.

I know many have wished for decent lights for their rigs but only find kits costing hundreds and not near as nice as these!

I own both of those lights. Go to harbor frieght and salvage and search for hid and they are even cheaper. They both are hunks of crap. not worth the money. light pattern VERY spotty. Ballastes cheap, everything about them says crap.

Thanks Bill.... all I have to go on are the looks and the specs..... Once again, its valuable to have a forum where folks can share their experiences to prevent others from going through the same torment......

So right you are!.... http://search.harborfreight.com/cpisearch/web/search.do?keyword=hid&Submit=Go

Have you found any others you like similar?

I guess what makes them crap.... just too cheap?

Maybe I should focus on mounting my BB!.... especially if I can find a pan type mount.

what makes them crap other than the extremely light and cheap plastic design is the fact that when you hook them up the output is crazy. light output is not what a usual 35 watt hid is, probably half. and it is literally thrown on the ceiling and floor and everywhere but where it is supposed to go. I have 25 different 35 watt lights on various equiptment I own. The best bang for my buck in a flood is go to suvlights.com buy the osram x1010's when the come take them apart and remove the bulb cover. this makes a great flood 35 watt hid, for 150$. for a spot, buy a 9 inch reflector from them take aprt the x1010 and put it all in there, boom a self contained spotlight. reflector was 80$ I think.

No kiddin..... those look like nice chrome metal... I should have known.....

thanks for the tip..... I"m guessing for a boat, the flood pattern may be just fine.. especially if they are fixed mounted..... does allot of unnecessary light go up into the air that should be down at the horizon ...in other words.. do you think the flood pattern would be ok for a boat installation?

If you are just mounting one, the x1010 is the way to go. the second one to add is the one you make with the housing from suv lights, it's more of a longer range. you should buy a set of x1010 you'l love one on everything you own, and one puts out 3500 lumens which is 5 times more than one 50 watt halogen so one is nice, on anything, golf cart, 4 wheeler etc.

Hi guyzz,

Only 3500 lumens ??? The 35watt 9" in the link posted by Windstrings, produces 4900 lumens according to specs....!! GUESSS NNNOTTT !!!

Best regards,

Ra.

Gota love how they just throw that 4900 figure in there for the heck of it......:ohgeez:

2900 lumens is more like it at 6000K and 35 watt. Also interesting on Harbor Freight links you gave. They also are selling illegal to import and sell conversion kits for cars. The Feds in the past have had some big fines for large resellers. A few years ago one company was fined $250,000.00 for selling this stuff. I bet they have no idea what could happen to them. Most of the stuff is sold on e-bay now shipped in to the buyer from offshore or Canada. No well informed legitimate business will touch that stuff.

Also 2 obvious lies in the detailed descriptions. DOT certified, that is impossible. Only the complete headlight package can be DOT compliant. DOT does not certify anything. Also, an exact same style standard replacement type bulb can be DOT compliant.

The other lie, 105 C temp rating. To do that only the highest quality graded electronic components could be used inside. The ballasts are made in China and I assure you they would fail if operated at 70C for any continuous amount of time.

If harbor freight was fully aware I doubt they would take the risks selling these illegal automotive conversion kit products. see the link below, especially view the posts by MR 108 he was a "fed" and now is retired

Sorry for the side-step question, but isn't it illegal to use lights on a boat other than when pulling up to a dock? I don't own a boat but my friends that do told me this.

Humm.. if so, I'm not aware of it.... it would sure be hard to drive at night if it was.... tree stumps, floating debris would all be a challenge and very dangerous. I guess those rules would be except in rescue operations.

Maybe they are afraid you will kill other folks night vision.... but isn't that the same issue on the road?

Of course in a boat, they are not fixed to a flat horizontal place and the waves etc will tend to bounce them in people eyes in other boats....

Good question!

There is a lot I could read into that "compliment". :huh2:

Yeah, you know by now that I have a weird, but sincere sense of humor almost every time. Columbo was one of my favorite all time shows....how he notices all the little details, and has an often colorful way of presenting them.

I have not seen anyone on these forums who knows as much of the small details about HIDs as you....and in this case, I would not have even thought to check if Harbor Freight was selling what would possibly turn out to be a prohibited item. You knew it off the top of your head!!!

Well have you ever seen a boat with bright lights on at night? Other than the required navigation green/red lights? I sure have not. Either on the ocean, a lake, or on a river. I agree it seems dangerous, but to my understanding that is the law... no headlights allowed on boats.

I was not offended but more curious since I don't play dumb.....
