Which device, or both, should I, if any, buy in order to begin my night vision odyssey? I live in the sticks, and head for the hills when I can, and want to see in the dark while standing, sitting and walking.

Candidates from Costco: http://www.costco.com/Common/Search...e=1_en-_-Top_Left_Nav-_-Top_search&lang=en-US

I'm thinking the binoculars and/or the monocular with headset. I've seen the monocular NV with headset on the popular auction site for about $270 delivered and I'm leaning in the direction of that Bushnell unit, model #262013. It uses two "N" size batteries but I've located rechargeables in this size for $2 each.

A link for NV from Bushnell:

Cheaper alternative: eye patch. The pirate eye patch may not have been used because of a bad eye. It could have been used to preserve night vision for when the pirate went below, remove the patch or slide it over to the other eye, so he could see better in the dark (to better locate the rum, loot or fight). This really works as seen on Mythbusters. http://mythbustersresults.com/epsode71

Someone stop me.

If you wanna walk with it the only option is a binocular unit(mind you, not biocular), otherwise you'll lose stereoscopic vision :shakehead
Talking about quality, gen1 are really crappy so I suggest you to choose at least a Gen2 or better a Gen3 if you can afford it, your eyes will thank you

shoot for gen 3, there are some guys on the site here who regularly modify, build and repair night vision units, gen 3's can be built sometimes for 1500 or under if you shop around

Great :)
I'd be interested in something like the PVS/14, can you recommend me someone who builds it? Thanks :D
