NightCutter M60L Luxeon 5 review - FLR.com

I purchased one of these lights after reading your review. I was not real thrilled with either of the included optics or the reflector. I did have a spare 17mm reflector so I tried it. Now I am very impressed with this light. I also found that with the 17mm reflector I could get another 2 feet of light on each side of the corona by using the crenated bezel. The beam is now very similar to my Elektrolumens XM-3 with a UCL only wider and more then twice as much light overall. With a UCL it will be noticeably brighter. The only down side to the beam is that there is a slight dark spot in the center of the hotspot. This was the case with every optic and reflector I tried. Wth rechargeables this may well become my most used light for short to medium distances. It is also bright enough with a wide enough beam to be a nice backup mountain bike headlight.

On another topic, you do the best flashlight reviews on the internet. Keep up the great work. I have relied on your reviews for each of my LED light purchases and have not been dissappointed yet.

Glad to hear you turned a "so-so" into a "save" by using a 17mm reflector. The M60L I received had a reflector and two optics. I liked the throw of the tight optic, but not the square corona. The wider optic smoothed it out alot. The included reflector just made a wide flood of light. I'd probably stick with the medium optic myself.

Almost all the lights using Luxeon V LEDs produce that dark spot in the center - even the Surefires.

Since that last post I hand sanded, very precisely using a random orbit sander, a UCL to fit into the M60L. I was not real thrilled with the square corona either. Not because it was square, rather mine seemed to be made up of four smaller squares and the brightest portions of the hotspot were not in the center, but rather toward the inner corners of the four smaller squares. The 17mm reflector with the UCL works real well in this light and the corona with the crenated bezel is brighter and wider then the wide angle optic and it is round.
The beam is like a cross between my XM-3 and my Tri-Star Phazer. There is still a slight dark spot in the center of the hotspot that the XM-3 and Phazer do not have. Other then that, as I mentioned in my previous post, the main beam is very similar to the XM-3 with a nice defined hot spot and bright even corona. The crenated bezel gives the corona that endless or gradually fading into darkness feel that the Phazer has.

One last thought so people do not get the wrong impression of my opinion of this light. It truly is a work of art and if I did not have a 17mm reflector at my disposal I would have been fine with the custom fitted LP and its peculiar beam. It just could not have doubled as a backup mountain bike headlight without having to switch back and forth between optics, which is no problem since the M60L came with two optics and the wide angle reflector. I just wanted to avoid that inconvenience. With the 17mm, UCL, and crenated bezel the light is simply amazing. It is my own pocket floodlight that can light up a good area 100+ feet away . I tried it in a room that is 60' long by 40' wide with a 14 foot ceiling. The corona lit up entire far half of the room, not just the far wall.
It is also worth mentioning that Lightship Enterprises has been great to work with and I would not hesitate to get more of their products in the future.

While my Phazer is better for certain multiple use applications-

My M60L does have its own specialty in the multiple use arena-
