thanks
Mike..

I have seen another thread on exactly this subject, and in normal circumstances I would point you to it and close this thread; however the search function is currently not available so I can't!

If any other member can help here, and give a useful link, that would be kind.

This thread can stay open for the time being.

That's a real tossup! Both are top quality lights. Both have fairly striaghtforward UIs. Both are single cell.

I had and sold the 85P and still have the L1 Cree. I liked the beam of the L1 better, and of course it is much simpler to use than the 85P. But perhaps the 85T would be nearly as simple and a bit more flexible with more levels. I don't know and can't answer that for you. Neither one will disappoint you.

If you don't mind the hassle, I think the 85P might suit you more. The brightness is programmable according to your needs, so you can have a really low low and instantly switch to high in a matter of clicks ... and further more, the 85P and the 85T both are of the same price ... if you really like the tactical clicky, you can get one of those along with the light ...

MOD - please delete my dupes!

CPF hung up on me!

(Moderator note: Got you covered...I deleted the duplicates & left one with content. Crazy eh?! :ohgeez: )

Poor guy! :) I tried posting and CPF hung up. It wasn't only me - I see several threads with multiple posts.

OK gl22man, the search function is back, so here is a thread for you to read. It is a comparison of the 120P/T rather than the 85T, but it may help to give you an idea.

I believe the Novatac 85-series has been discontinued, and they are only selling 120s now. Despite the number difference, 85 vs 120 lm is not a big actual difference when you compare them side by side.

There are many other threads about Novatac and/or SF L1 and/or other 1-cell lights.

"No-va, No-va, No-va!" (said like Bluto's "To-ga" from Animal House).

The link DM51 provided has great info for helping to make the decision. They are both very good lights, but very different in capability and design. If all you need is two modes and the lowest on the L1 is good enough for you, then the L1 could be it. The L1 is a little more rugged. Fast and simple.

But if you want greater versatility in a smaller form factor, the NovaTac 85T is your answer. One other thing--the NovaTac has more accessory parts readily available (through Light Hound).

Good luck on your decision. :)

FWIW,
I just ordered an L1-Cree. I love the L4 and after all these years, I'm finally ready to bring his smaller, smarter brother into the family.

The sad part - I EDC a Novatac 120P and I carry a SureFire E1 body/KL4 head (TW4 Clone) and a McClicky two stage switch, which gives me the basic L1 capability but mechanical rather than circuit driven.

I use both regularly. I use the Novatac when I need the luxury of multiple modes.
I use the E1L when I want a quick low stage that can switch to high.

If I had to choose - I'd do the Novatac. I'm just glad that I don't have to.

Interesting. I guess I'm one of those dinosaurs who never felt the need for multiple modes or multiple levels. My usage is mundane but regular and thus far, on and off have sufficed. I've tried the 2-stage on my L4 but didn't want to give up the clicky. I think the L1-Cree is the light that finally breaks the category of single level/single mode for me.

In the spirit of CPF, "buy both!" :naughty:
LOL! Not this cowboy. I'm a one horse (at a time) kind of flashlight guy. I carry one knife, one phone, one flashlight, and one keychain. My lights and I mold each other a bit and I sorta like it that way. :)

I was a single flashlight guy. Now I carry at least two lights and one rechargeable battery as a spare, or one light and 2 spare rechargeable batteries.

There is a benefit of a multi-level light. I don't really have too many times where I can justify the need for a multi-level light, but there are some benefits.

Oh, don't get me wrong. When I travel, I carry my L4 EDC and a belt holster with three sets of backup primary lithium cells. And my rumble bag holds all manner of chargers, PALlights, Opalec, Pilas and chargers, Cylalume, Polaris, etc. But for EDC, it's me and my L4, Mini-RSK and that's it. There's a risk to be taken, of course, but I just couldn't stand carrying more on my belt or person. And for the fact that I live and work in suburbia and city center, help is never really far, far away.
