I have an off brand battery for my Sony PSP that let go. It hasn't been used in a while and was sitting on my file cabinet. I walked by and noticed a circuit board that was not there before. The lithium polymer cell expanded in the hard plastic casing, breaking it open.
Fortunately the cell must have been in a safety bag that has held the expanding gases. Given the cell was on top of a bunch of paper. Now the cell reposes in a tin can on a concrete floor away from any flammables.
My guess is it dropped too low and failed. The only abuse I inflicted was neglect. So I'm more wary of off brand batteries like that.
