hi, i typically use HID and white LED's for lighting but i have a need for HIGH INTENSITY IR Led's, the stock leds in my security camera have failed for an unknown reason, they were not that old, but none the less, they no longer output... on top of the fact that they really dident provide enough IR light to begin with. can anyone give me some spec's and such for my application?

Not quite the answer you're looking for, but I hear that incandescent bulbs with IR filters spit out gobs of IR...

I did a mod some time back with a cheap digital video camera (actually, someone else wrote it up first) using a dozen generic "high brightness" IR LED's from the local electronics store that ended up producing useful light out to 20' or so. I think I drove them @ 20mA.

yeah, well like i said, not looking to evolve into sub structures for my cam, looking to replace the stock LEDs with something a lil more reliable & with a lil more kick. Incans aren't quite practical in this application, it's a small cam, 3 LEDs on each side, but the Radio Shack i have here doesent stock any High Brightness IR LEDs 🙁 not to mention the ones they DO stock aren't exactly in the right nM range, more for replacement in IR remotes. so i was wondering if anyone on here had any ideas of replacement LEDs that i can use to upgrade the dead stock ones. and if so... where to get them.

Am I imaging things or are a couple replies missing in this thread? Including mine? Deleted due to links?

I thought I had replied too, just wanted to say that if all 6 LEDs went out at the same time, the LEDs may still be good and it could just be the driving circuitry that has malfunctioned.

yes actualy, that is what had happened, i've dismantaled to cam and have begun to formulate a plan to revamp the lighting, still would like to upgrade to better LEDs tho.

Well I posted a link to Digikey script for 100mA 5mm infrared leds, approx 6 or 7 makers, quality Japanese. Since I am not sure why my reply was lost, I will just leave it to you to search Digikey. Be curious to know what you order and if it's a significant improvement.

Alternatively you could build a separate housing with power IR leds IE 1 watt or "3 watt" from some of the various Chinese vendors, or Digikey has all the way up to 2A drive current and as high as 1200mW/sr which is a LOT.

well, theres not alot of room inside the cam itself but after removing the PCB for the lights, i should be able to fit 7 LEDs total, 3 on each side and 1 where the photo cell (auto night mode) used to be, the PCB is pretty fried, i think a combo of poor design and application caused the failure, since even one of the power wires to it were cut pretty badly & then taped over😕. but in the spot that the photo cell used to be, i'm thinking a larger 1w may fit! :naughty: so with 6 med-high powers on each side & 1 good 1watter dead center below the cam, i'm thinking the lighting will be significantly improved... now just gotta fig out the power/cooling values.

you need 850nm leds, the way you can tell them apart from 950 nm (weak leds used in cameras and remote controls), is that they have very weak red glow, barely noticeable, 950 nm leds don't have that.
850 work better as illumination for ir sensitive cameras, they come in many formes, 5mm, 10mm, highpower leds on stars...etc.
