Hi all. Very much a flashlight newbie here. The Baton 4 from Olight looks like an awesome light. My only hesitation is that it looks like it only runs on proprietary Olight cells. Can you use a "normal" non Olight 16340 in the Baton 4?

No. The Olight S1Rii (discontinued) could accept a standard CR123A or 16340 but when the Baton 3 was introduced the negative and positive contact were combined to the head following the redesign in the Warrior Mini 2.

But you could technically hack any 16340 with some conductive foil or tape to work in the Baton 4 (potentially very dangerous if you aren't sure of what you are doing).

That is unfortunate. Aside from more battery sales, what does Olight gain from this battery design?

It creates a better neg connection path to the driver (cannot be accidentally interrupted by unthreading), so it is actually advantageous for most end users who aren't as technically inclined.

On their other lights with the tail button, it lets them use the housing as the signal path instead of having to use a double tube (Acebeam/FW3A/KR1) or signal wire (HDS).

For a company that sells millions of dollars in lights a year... they actually do not seem to care about the bottom line on their batteries. From personal experience and others' reported ones, they seem to give them away just as frequently when a customer experiences an issue.

I recently got a great deal on a S1R Baton II ( i bought 2) after purchasing enough merchandise during the Olight sale that just ended.
I already had the newer Baton 4.
I had no idea about the proprietary battery with the negative positive in the head of the battery. I'm ok with that but originally wanted to possibly use 123 batteries at least as a quick backup. Oh well live and learn.
On a side note the S1R Baton II is by far a better light. It has less Lumens but is a lot brighter for some reason? Maybe i have a defective Baton 4?
The S1R on turbo will burn your hand in seconds (about 8 inches away where the Baton 4 doesn't seem to get hot in the same time and I haven't tested it more than 10 seconds. I would consider the 4 a safer light though. Just my 2 cents

Example: two what appear to be very similar lights?

They use the same battery with positive and negative located in the head. Yet one is head up and one is head down? I thought head down was new technology/"the new way"yet the newer Baton 4 is what i consider normally oriented?
I know the Baton Turbo is head down oriented and i thought that was a newer release?
I will have to be careful.

The proprietary cells are the main reason I will no longer purchase or recommend Olight to anyone. I would suggest the OP do a search about Olight's reputation. The quality seems to be hit or miss. While Olight sells replacement cells they are often not in stock or quickly discontinued.
