Fun little single mode AAA Twisty lights

modding album

I had no idea the stock emitters they use have that much green. You mod looks incredible
thank you! ;-)
I have not decided what to put in this one yet:

The only led I'm missing now is the old favorite 4500k, 219b.
have you decided what host light you would want?
219b 4500K sw45k D220 is available off the shelf in the Emisar D3AA, highly recommended host, and they offer a very broad selection of other LED options as well..

D3AA uses the most efficient AA/14500 driver available.today, with Regulated output and NoPWM. It is and Anduril light, with ultra low modes and easy ramping access to the full range of outputs. My favorite UI.

sw45k also works in these little Olight i3e:

I have become very fond of the DeDomed 4500K 519a (it becomes 3400K, a very pleasant warm tint for the evening, and nightstand), I actually use it more than my sw45k lately.

My nightstand is anchored as mentioned. Not quite as into lights as I used to be so will probably just do without. I have an i3e in the box and a
couple Ti3s, one in titanium that needs some work. Thought about having a few things modded but just haven't gotten around to it.
I tend to hop hobbies periodically so there's that too.
It's good chatting with you again!

How about modding one of these i3e lights to take a 10440 and make a tiny yet extra bright light? The i3T2 is specifically made to take a 10440 for a little more output, and many people have used 10440's in regular i3T's successfully, but some have fried theirs.

I suspect the i3T2 is simply the i3T binned for being able to handle the higher voltage, unless they actually did change something. I'd love to see a teardown comparison.

Emisar KC1 can do that, and you get your choice of LED, all for under $20:
I have a couple of KC1s that Vinh turned *way* down for me -- I much prefer long runtime/ low output over bright and brief.
But I have to say -- I would love to have the same low output in the ie3 format. They are just so tiny -- especially. the stock black model. Even the KC1 feels bulky by comparison.

Is the stock black now the same form factor as the newer vase style stuff?

Not exactly, no -- the black one is just slightly slimmer, especially at the tail end.

ETA: thanks for the photos! As you can see, the difference is really small. And there may even be a central section where the fancy, cannon-style body has been turned down to a slimmer diameter than the blocky, squared off original style? But again, we're talking fractions of mms.

I shoved a lithium aaa primary in there...it's SUPER light

Maybe it's an illusion, but it feels like the ie3 is smaller and lighter than any other AAA light still commonly manufactured.
Like -- I really like the stainless steel Fenix Silvglow. But that thing is a tank! If you put it on a zipper-pull, that zipper is going to pull itself down!
The ie3, by contrast, feels like it might float on water -- esp, as you say, if you feed it with a Lithium L92.

Yes the Black Olight i3e is the only one with the old style body. All the other colors have the new Vase Shaped body (flared at the tail).

The Skilhunt E3a is available with a High CRI LED, and comes in other colors than black, without a flared tail. It weighs 7.3 grams empty.

The E3a is built better, the head does not wobble as much, so it is less likely to turn on in pocket, the pill is metal instead of plastic, and it is easier to disassemble for modding.

The Olight pill is plastic and is glued to the PCB, modding requires breaking the glue seal, and regluing before reassembly.

a few Skilhunt E3a modding pics

and modding sequence for Olight i3e

Olight changed the i3e to having two o-rings to address issues of it turning itself on or the head unscrewing and falling off in pockets. The only single ring one I have is an i3UV eos. Its head is shorter than the dual ring version.

The one I really like is my polished stainless steel i3T. Has a nice weight.

head is shorter than the dual ring version
yes, the Nichia compatible V5 has a longer head and 2 O rings. The short head green one on left is a UV model with 2 O rings. otoh, the brown one w short head and Cool White LED happens to have only 1 O ring.

V5 models are Nichia compatible, but even with the two O rings, they turn on more easily from lateral pressure than the Skilhunt w one O ring:

Olight V5 models w 2 O rings turn on more easily in pocket from sideways pressure, than the Skilhunt which has tighter tolerances (and only One O ring).

The Skilhunt is mechanically superior to the Olight, plus the Skilhunt is available with a High CRI LED (no modding needed, and it is also 3535 compatible).. Here is a Skilhunt w an SST-20 DR 660nm:
