Optics for 5mm LED\'s?

I was wondering if there are optics available for 5mm LED's. Something that you could slide over them or something, like with Luxeons. Seems like optics for 5mm LED's only come in the form of a molded lens, which you can not fiddle around with like those Luxeon optics.

Re: Optics for 5mm LED\'s?

I have seen a 12mm reflector from osram (e.g. conrad electronics in germany sells them).
But I have never tested it.
Look at page 43 of the following document:
LIGHT_EMITTING_DIODES.pdf

Perhaps this reflector could be also modded for luxeons?

Look on led museum's site, under the vector UV flashlights. They use some sort of secondary focusing optic for the already "focused" 5mm UV leds.

The 2AA Brinkmann Rebel has something that might be what you're looking for. It's a lens that is sort of a cup as ell. I don't know the specs as far as beam angles or anything like that but it creates a very well defined hotspot ala Inova X1 or Princeton Tec Impact. Which I kinda don't like.

Is that what you meant by molded lens? Are you just wanting something super small to save space or so you can use more than one on a single light?

Re: Optics for 5mm LED\'s?

I have had several 5mm LED lights with *optics* of sorts and found all but the UK2AAA eled optics more irritating than useful. Most do not focus the light much tighter than a standard 5mm LED beam at short range but rather end up keeping a round ball farther out with rings around it. If you are trying to get more throw out of a 5mm LED it is IMO a waste of time. I do like the defocusing lens on the UK light that makes it even more of a flood at a distance. I have the lens/reflectors out of a brinkman 2AA led and a doublebrite everyeady CCFL led light sitting around here. I found the doublebright LED part too irritating to use.

Yup, that (and those Vector light lenses) is what I ment with molded lens.

Yes, something small to save space (one optic per LED). I recently bought one of these optics that are ment for Luxeons so I could experiment with 5mm LED's, see what it does, etc.

The 5mm did not fit the little gap and so the output was useless. However, I wonder how the output would be if it did fit the gap. I have several bicycle taillights that use different kind of optical lenses. Some of which are capable of delivering interesting beam output, which is what led me to this question. I can give some examples if you're interested.

Do they look like this?
