Does anyone know by how much one shortens the operating life of XR-E LED's by driving them at 1A? Is it negligible?

depends on how it was heatsinked, what power dissapation (Pd) is the heatsink designed for and how hot the junction temperature (Tj) in the LED gets.

note the heatsink temperature is NOT equivalent to junction temperature.

If you heatsinked it well and kept Tj around 25C, your not going to loose many hours at 1 amp...:tinfoil:

This question has two variables: current and junction temperature (heatsinking). Cree projects 70% lumen maintenance at 50,000 hours if junction temperature is held below 80˚C. It doesn't matter what current the LED sees; as long as the temperature is low enough you won't lose lifetime.

You may get better answers by putting this in the correct sub forum. EG Homemade and modified.
