P60 Cree R2 LED Drop in for Surefire G2

If you are set on buying that drop-in, why not take a look at a Solarforce 5 mode from SBFlashlights? Look for Jake25 at the Marketplace. I'm not sure if there are any sales or discounts going on so you can PM him.

Also BTW it is recommended that you install a metal head since the LED produce heat and the standard plastic head will not channel heat as well as a metal one.

If you are looking for a low cost metal head or you can also purchase a 6P or G2L head from the Marketplace.

solarforce dropins work with the G2 but you have to remove the outer spring, for me that has caused connection issues and flickering if the light gets dropped or moved around .
not something i want to count on in an emergency but fun to play around with non the less

AT $42 dollars is way way too expensive.

I would go with a maloff Devices M60 or a Trunite XP-G R5 which already tested at 260 OTF lumens.

Its $21.95 for the one I was asking about and the sbl one recommended is $18.99.

Where did you get $42.00 from?

I wonder how many hours before the drop-in dies with all that heat trapped in there?

I'm new to modding lights and have some questions.

If I use the drop in I listed will the light overheat? Why will it over heat, because the more lumens the drop in will produce?

Will the Malkoff M60 dropin prevent the light from overheating?

Where is the best price to get the Malkoff M60 at?

Thanks..guys.

You have a standard G2 correct? If so it has a plastic head and plastic is not a good conductor of heat (which LED produce). So after prolonged use, the LED module will heat up and over time the heat will probably reduce the life of the LED or burn it out.

Where to buy a M60? Hows about the Marketplace...lots of them being sold and many dealers to buy from

Yes, I do have the standard G2 with the plastic body. Thanks for the information on this. I will check out SBFlashlights too, especially for the metal head for my G2. Thanks again.

Not to get too off topic here but can anyone link me to a test someone has done where they measured the LED output of a standard imported P60 LED dropin after being run in a Nitrolon host for a while? I tried searching but it only turned up the anecdotal recommendations to just not even bother putting an LED in a Nitrolon light. I understand the principle and I agree in general that the LED will eventually die a painful death but I haven't come across any well documented testing.

buy quality, buy once.

get yourself a malkoff

Absolutely. I bought and used at least four other brands before I finally gave up. Many were good, some poor, but the difference in performance and quality was pretty evident. Now, the others are all sold (or given as gifts to unsuspecting non-flashaholics) and all my surefires are sporting Malkoffs. I have the Malkoff bulbs in MCE, MCE direct drive, 60lw, 60 9v, and several other 60s. All have worked just great over the past year since I converted.

Also, i have enjoyed dealing direct with them myself. Great folks.

Just last year, before coming to this forum, all my lights had incandescent bulbs, and i was happy. Now, i understand that a person can indeed have a flashlight addiction. Oh well, this is far better than lots of others.

Merry Christmas everyone.

I've been using the Solarforce R2 single-mode in my G2, running off a 17670 Li-ion. No issues so far.

In warmer ambient temperatures, yeah the plastic head gets kinda warm, but it's about the same as a metal light. I check it periodically or keep my hand around the head if I'm using it for longer time periods, but most of the actual uses are not all that long, or it's outside use with enough cool air.

I've done runtime tests with the light in front of a fan. It gets about 2.5 hours TOPS before shutting off (protection circuit trips), so I'd call it about 2 hours of use before it starts ramping down. It appears to be only semi-regulated at this voltage level, but that's good for longer battery run time.

The Solarforce drop in is only about 20 bucks, so if you burn it up it's no big deal anyway!
