...AWESOME!!! I ordered a Pelican L1 from theledlight.com, and I also ordered a spare lens for my PAL Gold. As I was playing around with the L1, I noticed that it's lens diameter was about the same as the PAL lens. I popped the L1's lens out and put in the PAL lens, and the result was a VERY nice beam that seemed to almost double the L1's intensity! At about 5 feet away, the perfectly round and smooth beam is about twice as wide as the main beam of my PT Impact (albeit, only about half as bright...). For a keychin sized light, the beam is wide enough to still be fully functional as a small flood style light, yet intense enough to light a distance 2 to 3 times farther than my Photon III

! The only drawback is since the PAL lens is thicker than the L1 lens, the edge of the L1's bezel doesn't go completely over the O ring...I'll hafta work on that

. Anyway, the end result was very good. I'm so pleased with it that I'm not gonna take the lens off, even though I've obviously given up water resistance. BTW, the regular PAL lens works also, but the PAL Gold lens gives a MUCH cleaner beam!

I was wondering how long it was going to take somebody else to discover the almost astonishing value of a lens change in the L1.

I've been using a magnifying plastic lens in mine for more than a year now. (from B. G. Micro surplus-plastic lens set-99¢. Makes my L1 outperform my $29. Lightwave 2000 -for beam throw

Do you guys have any pictures you can post showing how this simple mod looks like? I have several L1s just lying around and collecting dust. I'm not very much fond of it because it lacks brightness. But the torquoise is brighter than the white ones and thus, more useful. Thank you so much!

No photo capability, but the B. G. Micro part # is 1002.
The only part swap is the 14mm lens itself. In the intense (white) beam you will see the LED die and even the tiny bond wires, but NO hole in the center of the beam..
-Very hard to believe, but the beam shines across my 60' front lawn.

Btw-the head/bezel of the light will screw on properly and will tighten exactly and to the same extent as the original lens allowed it to.

-No idea how this would work out with a non-white LED though....

zephyr...same as mrglow, I have no photo capabilities. But with the PAL Gold lens, no bond wires are visible in the beam. Just a perfectly round, very bright beam of light that's not too narrow and not too wide. Next time you order anything from theledlight.com, have them add a PAL replacement lens to your order, put it in your L1, and I promise you the L1 won't gather nearly as much dust in the future

Thank you very much PJD and mr.glow for your repsonse, and I really appreciate it. I will probably order those lenses from B.G. Micro electronics or maybe purchase some from The Ledlight and try it myself.

with the replacement lens, does the beam still maintain some of its highly useful (IMO) sidecast? I don't want an led spot light, I like some side spill for close up, and gnrl. navigation....I love my L1

You'll get 6 cheap plastic lenses, but the one you want is the 14mm one in there.

, the answer is no. You're better off with the stock lens. -If you're asking one of the other 4 Dougs, then the answer is still no.

Geoff in Philly...with the Pal lens that I ordered from theledlight, the beam doesn't maintain any of it's side cast, but the beam the L1 produces with this lens is wide for a "spot" type beam, and IMO far more useful than the beam put out by a regular PAL light. The beam width I got from a distance of about 20' is approx 10', and the light output is VERY nice. I think if you try it you won't be disappointed...and if you are you can take the lens right back out, and you're only out a little over 2 bucks
