Hi all!

I've been hanging around this site for a while now, and finally pulled the trigger on a new light. I'm new to this so all opnions are welcome...with that said I have a couple questions for you guys:

1. What do you think about my new light? It's a Pelican M6 Lithium #2320.
2. I also ordered a P9 from Surefire...What do you think about it?
3. I live in Arizona, is there any concerns about keepin one, if not both lights in my truck? The sumertime here hits at least 110 everyday...do you think it's wise to store those lights with the lithium batts in the glove box?

Thank you for your opnions!

Welcome to CPF alliedraptor!

Both the SF 9P and Pelican M6 are long time favorites around here and have both had a ton of various discussion. Both use a similar style lamp assembly which is often called a 26mm tactical lamp assembly. (or D26, or P60 compatible). There are numerous D26 size LED and incandescent modules that can be swapped into those light to change their performance and runtime etc etc, so it's a nice solid start to flashaholism :)

Many people do store lithium powered lights in cars in the hot sun. but each case should be considered carefully. If I recall correctly, they should be stored or operated in the -40F - 140F temperature range. The temperature on the inside of a car can go way higher than the temperature outside when sitting in the sun. In a desert climate with long hours of direct sunlight, I think I would avoid leaving CR123s anywhere in the car; but I'm sure there are probably hundreds of CR123s that get left in baking hot cars all the time and we don't hear many stories about burning cars as a result of CR123s on the news. Again, personally, I'd avoid it, but if you must, maybe get full coverage just in case :)

Thanks for the reply mcocod....and keeping the 123's out of the truck is kinda what I figured. I'll just have to get used to taking them with me when I leave the house.

I'm glad to hear that I bought decent lights...I could find only limited info and reviews on the P9 and almost none on the M6, so I kinda invested blind.

Is there any neat mods or tricks for the Pelican M6? Does it take well to being moded...or should I just leave well enough alone for reliability sake?

What are some standard upgrades or mods people are using and doing to they're p9's to make them even brighter?

Is the P9 just a 3 cell p6, so what will work on one, will work on the other...or are they two completely different animals?

I hope I'm not asking lame questions, I just keep comming up with nothing when I search.

Thanks-

JM

Welcome, and hang on to your wallet. The SureFire 9P is a great flashlight. You can add a P91 lamp assembly for 200 lumens, you can change it over to an LED, you could add a Turbo Head, you can use rechargeable batteries, you can turn it into a 12P (see my sig line below). Playing SF leggo is sure a lot of fun. You could of course just leave it like it is and enjoy it and use it.

The Pelicans are good useful lights. I gave my 6 volt/2 battery incand to my nephew to introduce him into quality flashlights.

Look at a Fenix for your next purchase. You me be getting poorer but your life is getting brighter.

What can I expect out of a 12p as far as throw and brightness? Where can I find all the pieces to do the mod?

Are you happy with the mods...or if you had to do it again, would you do it different? I know it's alot of questions, but it's better to learn from those that have already driven down that road. :)

My 12P has good throw and it is also a wall of light. You will need an extender from SureFire or Lighthound (made by TNC). The lamp assembly will be a 12 volt G&P available from Ebay or google search. These are about 225 lumens for about 50 minutes. You could also get a 1.6 inch small turbo head from Cabela's. The are only $30 and make the beam a little smaller and improve throw. They are available in 9 volt or 12 volt.

I never thought I would play SureFire leggo but I have ended up doing it with most of my lights . Some I have just added a high output lamp assembly, like a P91. All of my 6 volt/2 battery lights I have changed over to LED and most of my 9 volt lights will be changed over to LED this year. LEDs are taking over from incands so your all aluminum 9P will be able to take the heat and will be moddable for a very long time. When you get it you will understand SureFire quality. You will never be sorry you bought a SureFire.
