Pencils.

I think the Pentel is the best, or one of the best, mechanical pencils. That said, I prefer to touch wood and not synthetic materials. And sharpening a pencil is part of using a pencil. I miss this when I use mechanical pencils.

Nothing, really nothing comes close to the Faber Castel Perfect Pencil. Yes, it's around $10 a piece. So what? I don't buy hundreds of pencils every year. It is a bit heftier than normal pencils, not laquered and the grooves make it nice to hold and they look nice. They come in only one hardness: the perfect one.

Hope you feel better soon @gurdygurds.

If I remember to do it I'll dig out my wooden pencil looking mechanical pencil at work. I boxed up some items when moving from a cubicle to my own office, back to a cubicle. Inner-office politics and down sizing caught me up in the whirpool because I don't play nice with the children. I show up, do my job and stay to myself mostly. Yet I'm the guy everybody goes to for scissors, and a stapler.

It's a gun free office so I keep things like 2 heavy Swingline staplers, letter openers and scissors on my desk in case it ever becomes a David vs Goliath situation. If need be my laptop can quickly become a 3 pound throwing star as well. So the children are kinda scared of the quiet guy with lethal weapons ready to deploy if need be.

@gurdygurds - for your sickbed amusement, I looked around for what I have left. I went to 0.5 pencils in college, then kept using them for crossword puzzles, so I got a few cheap ones with big erasers. Now I just use ink pens for puzzles and don't bother erasing mistakes. The contrast is better.

Looks like I have the Pentel P225, QE405, Pilot G-2. I threw in an old Tacro 4440 drafting pencil with 4H still in it, and a Lamy Twin Pen with ballpoint and 0.5 pencil, eraser under the cap.

Seems like the erasers on most wood pencils harden up into uselessness after a few years.

Thanks for humoring me! QE405 is cool. Haven't seen that one before. I'm playing around with these P200s that I got to see what lead size I prefer. Then I'll pick my favorite color and plug that lead into that colored handle for best of both worlds.

You could say I have a preference...

• The classic color Sharps on the left stay in this desk's stationery cup (the hexagonal thing on the top left).
• The GraphGears all stay in a pencil case, for when I study on the go, typically a break from work.
• The other three on the right are my bag EDCs. Ironically they see the least use by a fair margin.

The one constant here is that all of them are loaded with Pentel HB (both Super Hi-Polymer and Ain Stein) lead, except for the two brown ones in 0.3mm. Those I loaded up with Pentel Ain 2B grade lead - 0.3mm HB is too scratchy on the paper I typically use, so 2B it is.

This here is a man who know what he likes. And he likes PENTEL! Thanks for sharing. I'm still learning about all these different models. What lead thickness do you prefer if you had to choose just one for everything?

Yep, I certainly do! I grew up with really horrible resin pencils like the Bic Evolution and cheap, easily-broken mechpencils with really loose tolerances and the unpleasant feel of the lead moving as I touch it to paper. Awful. :barf: I knew a few teachers at my mother's office that had a P205 Sharp here and there, and here they've always been somewhat of a luxury due to prices, so I grew up thirsting to get them. Now I can casually afford two or three a month, so I'm building up a tiny collection, as you can see from the color coordination of the classic Sharps and the GG500s. Only one I'm missing is a P205 in a novel color for my EDC satchel.

If I had to choose only one? I'd go with 0.9. It's a pleasure to use normally, glides nicely on paper, and if needed I can wear the tip down to a bevel to create a sharper point. And I can use it without fear even when I do arm day and my fine motor control is shot.

I have a mechanical kohinoor, a good one, I put the remains of the leads from wooden ones in it when they become too short to hold comfortably or start to break from old age. Over time, I switched to soft ones - 4B and softer. It's annoying when you start drawing something and the pencil breaks from the slightest touch. I really like pastel pencils, but they quickly dull the knife. That is, first I sharpen the pencil, then sharpen the knife. The best ones I've found so far are - Faber Castell. Sometimes can often find a set inexpensively at a local flea market

Uhhhhhh yea. Go with Bykfixer's link, lol. Good prices (y). After using the Sharps a bunch over the past weekend, found that I actually do prefer them with a rubber grip. Not needed, but definitely more comfortable. The graph gear is interesting. I'm imaging that it has the grip feel of the Zebra F-701.
