Penlight as Gift for a Nurse

My girlfriend is a nurse, and she uses penlights. They always get those cheapie plastic throwaway ones. I'd like to get her a nice one.

Are there any decent penlights out there that are low-lumen? I don't really know all the use cases, but I have seen her shine it into peoples' mouths, and into peoples' eyes. So... an 80-lumen model would probably not be ideal 😉

Thanks!

I agree with them. The Preon always starts on low level with two lumens and has a clicky. If the spot is still too bright for checking the eyes, she can use the spill of the light. On Medium level she has enough light for searching under a closet or something similat and the blinky modes are well hidden.

The Fenix LD05 is a classy looking light. Comes on in medium though, so that might be a drawback.

peak eiger qtc 2xAAA, infinitely variable, available with a momentary tail, and extremely bright. It will also go in the sub 1 lumen range (by my eye/estimate) and can be shone into eyes without discomfort. Its also available in hi CRI,might be helpful for a nurse.

my older daughter is an EMT, rode the ambulances, and currently mostly thru medical school. Although I gave her a Fenix LD01, she still uses those incandescent penlights on patients. why? low level and proper color rendering. IOW, look for a neutral light with at least one low level.

preon 2, neutral if you manage to find one... 4sevens is releasing hi=cri lights, if preon is included it would be the best possible choice!

low level is enough low to check pupils, medium to look into mouths, wounds etc, and high is enough bright to use it as a traditional flashlight outdoors.
the beam is very floody, and that's a plus for medical use.

Since 4sevens made High CRI available today, I'd say HighCRI Preon 2 🙂

I say Preon 2 high CRI. Best she can get for such applications. It is any healthcare specialist's dream light.

Those advising on High CRI Preon 2 are speaking wise words. It is a great light and the 4Sevens code for Veterans day gives a 15% discount (detailed on their front page) at present with the usual free shipping. The Satin Titaniun Preon 2 looks classy and is certainly a light I could keep in my shirt pocket at work! I have ordered two.

I just ordered one for myself. If my wife decides she wants it as an exam light, I just hope that 4sevens still has some in stock so I can buy another.

Of course, if she does want the Preon, then that means I can take back the LF2XT she's currently using...

flatline,

You spoke (wrote) too soon. The Satin Ti Preon 2 High CRI has sold out. It was the first one to go. The only light at the end of the tunnel so to speak is that David at 4Sevens is considering making High CRI lights part of the standard line up if they all sell well.

I guess you can console yourself that if your wife takes it then it is being used in a good cause - to help others!

There's still the regular Preon 2 and Preon 1 hi CRI models. Actually, I hope these things sell like hot cakes and that there is sustained demand for hi CRI lights so that they do become a regular option.
