Petzl Myo XP questions...

Re: anyone used myo xp for jogging yet?

Yes. I ran the last leg of Laurel Highlands 70 mile Ultra run using it. This is on rocky very narrow single track trail, at night. All I can say is....the Myo was fantastic. I could see trail markers @ 200 feet. Becasue the light was so bright, I could really run fast. When my crew saw the light, they compared it to a train headlight...and in fact, that is how they knew I was comming, by the brighness of the light. The other runners headlamps were not as bright.

I never had to use the boost mode because in the deep dark forest the Myo XP really punches through.

Interesting, UltraRunner. I crewed the Western States Endurance Run for my cousin last summer (100 miles- yow! but she won /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif) and I was noticing that a lot of the runners really seemed to be opting for light-weight lights, such as the Tikka and Zipka. She asked me about larger headlamps, so your comment is super helpful.

Di you use the beam spreader or changed it sometimes?

Re: anyone used myo xp for jogging yet?

Diffuser was in the down position or spotlight mode. I needed the throw to be able to see the trail markers way ahead.

Congratulations on your impressive run!

Did you find the removeable topstrap adequate in stabilizing the light? Did the angle setting hold for you?

FWIW I've been playing with an XP for about a week and am impressed with its brightness (brighter than the Eos and Zenix IQ on high and MUCH brighter in boost) and its many innovations. The removeable topstrap is a welcome touch and, especially, the flip-up diffuser is a great low-tech substitute for generating a floodlight without resorting to extraneous low-power LEDs. I hope PT and BD take note. I'm looking forward to seeing the smaller and lighter Tikka XP, which uses the same approach.

But I can't figure out why Petzl didn't include current regulation or make it immersible. If they'd done so, this would easily be the midweight LED headlamp champ.

Who knows, maybe since the Petzl Tikka XP has not been released yet, it might include the regulation that we are all looking for.

While the flip up diffuser looks like a great idea, I'd love to see a headlamp with two high power LEDs, one with a flood optic like the NX05 and the other a spot orientation. Then, have "fade" and "volume" controls. The idea is that you could go from all the way flood to all the way spot, or balance between the two.

The system should *not* use a single control with some crazy, complicated user interface. It should be simple and retain the last used setting upon power-on.

It would be nice to also have a flip up diffuser for absolute flood.

This, combined with AA based (rear mounted) battery pack, regulation, lithium battery compatability, adequate heatsinking (need to be able to run both LEDS on high at once for extended periods) and waterproof housings, and you have my perfect headlamp.

Well, I can dream, can't I?

(I think running both the spot and the flood LEDs at once would be great for in the woods and such. You'd have distance vision, but still be able to see the terrain right in front of you w/o tilting your head down.)

I'm not supprised about the regulation (although it is disappointing), but I think not making these lights waterproof (or at least waterproofish) is simply shoddy.

I bet against it. Regulation is not a big argument among ignorant users.
It is no feature you can easily show in a shop (you would have to change to weak cells to give an impression....

Yes top strap was fine and the angle setting held. Agree that the top strap is pretty cheesy. If you do a search here you'll see a topstrap mod that makes it way better but I have not done it yet.

F.Y.I. The light that is really taking the ultrarunning scene by storm is the new Gerber 3 watt LX 3.0 handheld.
