*PF4 is a Flashaholic get together in Califon, NJ. It's open to anyone who would like to attend.

The greatly anticipated 4th Photon Fest (PF4) is about to happen! Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 25th! This gives everyone about 4 weeks to get ready! (Man am I building this up or what!)

Well those of you who were at any of the first 3 PF's know what to expect. For those of you who were not here is a run down:

Date: Saturday June 25th
Start Time: High Noon (12:00).
End Time: way after dark, or stay the night and leave the next day. (see details below).

PF4 will be at the usual place, Scott's (Milkyspit) house in Califon, NJ. Please PM Scott (Milkyspit) for exact directions.

We usually start with a casual meet and greet. Of course the lights come out right away for a show and tell, and those who can't wait for the dark head into Scotts basement where it's dark.

Everyone is asked to bring something if they can: a bag of chips & dip, pretzels, etc, bottle of soda, cookies, fruit, whatever, something to snack on.

An additional tradition has been for those who can/want to, to bring a small give away item. Popular items in the past have been: key chain lights, pen lights, etc. These little inexpensive give away items are always appreciated. Last year someone with more artistic ability than me made a cool drawing commemorating the event, and gave copies to everyone, someone else provided blank name tags for everyone to use. A few guys offered up flashlight mods that went bad, in hopes that a new owner could make use of them, I think you get the idea.

Additionally many of us will have items for sale/trade, so bring some extra $$.

At some point we usually get a few pizzas or sub sanwiches for dinner.

Of course there is the mysterious "Field of Darkness" across from Scott's house, which contains a black hole that just eats up light before you can reach the tree line quite a distance away. Although many have tried, only few lights have been able to illuminate the tree line. However last year Ginsing showed up with some hyper lights, and one of them was such a monster it almost set the tree line on fire! Seriously, it was quite impressive.

And not to be overlooked is the annual trek (about a 1/2 mile walk) to the infamous quarry. An actual abandoned rock quarry, which apparently is sometimes used as a police shooting range now. Anyway we head into the dark reaches of the quarry, which gives an interesting backdrop for testing our lights.

In the past some CPF members out on the West Coast who could not attend sent out some of their cool mods for us to check out. Hopefully that will happen again.

One of the coolest things was when PK himself sent us some pre release Surefires (L5, L6, and two versions of the Beast) for us to look over and give feed back on.

And of course everyone is encouraged to bring as many lights with them as they can. What one person may think is a common light, another person may be contemplating buying, and will be very happy to get a chance to have a personal hands-on review of.

New this year: Scott has suggested that anyone who wants to sleep over is welcome to. Sleeping arrangements are as follows: On the couches/floor in his living room; Bring your tent and camp out in his back yard; Or for the real adventure seekers, camp out in the quarry!

I'm sure this date will work out great for some and bad for others. I'm sorry to those who will not be able to make it because of the date. It would have been impossible to try and coordinate the perfect date for everyone. For those who can't make it, hang in there, for PF5!

Well that's all for now. Hope to see you all there. --Tim

Re: PF4 - NJ, NY, PA, CT area get together - INFO

As usual, a great writeup making those unfamiliar with this event drool with anticipation. Because of PF3, I have cultivated nice friendships with some of the attendees, and have met a few of them at Shot Show in Las Vegas this past January. The nice thing about the gathering was that it was peaceful, people were generous with the snacks they brought, were well mannered, and were very willing to share their lights with others for examination.

As usual, Scott and yourself were perfect hosts. I for one appreciate that you have been so helpful to Scott in coordinating this event, at the expense of some inconvenience to you such as numerous emails, PM's, and phone calls from those who need elaboration on directions or on other issues.

Keep up the good work, and I will see you there!

Jeff

I knew it would be the day I am away /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: PF4 - NJ, NY, PA, CT area get together - INFO

I asked in the other thread, but that one seems to be dead now. Anyway, I'm pretty young (14 y/o), would I still be welcome to come? I don't know what kind of stuff I could bring, but I'd sure like to be there as a learning experience and to meet everyone if no one minds. May I attend?

Re: PF4 - NJ, NY, PA, CT area get together - INFO

Max,

Absolutely. I'm sure you'd be welcome. I think. I'd leave that to our host to make the final determination. If it's anything like PF3, you'll see so much stuff your eyes will goggle...until a hotwire mod slams them shut! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks for the PM, I should read this section more often.

You can count me in. It just happens to be perfect timing.

Now, what could I build in 4 weeks? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

Cheers

Re: PF4 - NJ, NY, PA, CT area get together - INFO

Hmm... gotta catch up on this reading! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Ginseng and Tweek, I'll toss in a little teaser... if I can get it together before PF4... and that's a big IF... I've got a semi-secret project codenamed "Flat Stanley" that will result in an LED light designed to pump out 300 lumens for upwards of 20 minutes in regulation. Now I realize that 300 lumens isn't worth squat in the hot wire world! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yellowlaugh.gif Until you consider that Flat Stanley will be about the size of a deck of playing cards, heh heh...

Re: PF4 - NJ, NY, PA, CT area get together - INFO

Wow, that sounds great Scott. I still have the blue Garrity lantern you gave me to work on. In fact, it was all together and cranking over 5,000 estimated lumens...but for some reason, it just sort of bored me so I took it all apart. Maybe I can get it back together for PF4. In any case, if I can make it, I'll bring some LED and hot wire mods to show.

Re: PF4 - NJ, NY, PA, CT area get together - INFO

Wilkey, that lantern sounds fantastic! 5,000 lumens!?! That's amazing! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif I'm REALLY hoping you find a way to attend. I'll put you up overnight, I'll feed you, whatever... just get on up here! Heck, bring the family if you like! It was such a pleasure to spend some time with you, and get to see things from your decidedly different (hot wire vs. LED) AND genius-caliber perspective... I'm hooked! Hope to see you here, and I promise you'll be blown away by some of the LED stuff sitting around here. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Also hoping Tweek can attend! He's got some ammo boxes for me, and I've got a very small keychain lantern (no joke!) to return to him. I'm hoping to convert at least one of the ammo boxes into a ghetto old-school lantern. Remember those handheld lanterns that were common a few decades back, where a big Energizer 12V battery with screw terminals literally hung off the bottom of a handle and large reflectored bulb? I've got an old head from one of those, and want to place a NiMH power pack inside an ammo box, then combine the two. This is a project I've really been looking forward to!
/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/party.gif

MSaxatilus and DaveT, hope you'll both be there! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Everyone else, too. It really is a fun day and evening, and you never know what you'll see and learn... but somehow, you always go home richer for the experience!

Re: PF4 - NJ, NY, PA, CT area get together - INFO

Gentlemen, I have to pass on my regrets. I was talking to Luxlover and we said June 25 and I said I'd have to check on the date...well, then it hit me why that day seemed iffy. I think you'll all forgive me if I say that my 5th wedding anniversary has to be treated as a trump card /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yellowlaugh.gif

I missed PF2 because friends came over for a quick lunchtime visit and ended up STAYING through dinner. I used that disappointment to push for attending PF3...but I'm not brave enough to even attempt the conversation this time.
Enjoy it guys
Dave

Say it isn't so Dave! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mecry.gif Of course, I understand your reason. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

You will be missed! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: PF4 - NJ, NY, PA, CT area get together - INFO

Dave,
Totally unacceptable excuse! The way I see it, you are even with your lovely wife on PF2 and PF3, and should start from scratch with a clean slate. Here is how to handle this seemingly hopeless situation......
You tell your wife that PF4 is a matter of life and death for you, and that you will treat her to a fantabulous 5th anniversary celebration a day before or after June 25th, and show her a better time next year.
In most probability, milkyspit will not dare host another PhotonFest gathering on June 25th, due to his respect for your marriage. So next year will not be a problem for you. Remember the key to a successful marriage is a little negotiating, and a lot of kissing up! If I want a favor from someone, I have no problem humbling myself a little to get it.

This post is mostly written to you in fun, Dave. I totally understand how important a timely anniversary celebration is to a wife. A wife probably has more sentimentality in her little pinky, than we as men have in our entire macho body. I speak from experience, boys and girls. On the other hand Dave, you may soften her up in the next 24 days, and she may give in to allowing you to attend PH4 because she loves you so dearly and would be happy having the 5th anniversary celebration before or after the actual date.

Don't give up yet. Remember, "it ain't over until the fat lady sings!" If despite all of your noble efforts you cannot make it, rest assured that I for one will give you a play by play action report of the days' activities.

Hopeful of your success,
Jeff

Re: PF4 - NJ, NY, PA, CT area get together - INFO

Luxlover here again!
I have some wonderful news for all of yous guyses who plan on attending PF4. We will have a special guest grace us with his presence. Steve Arya, the owner of the Brick NJ based internet/storefront dealership The Product Wizard, will attend milkyspit's event. There is more. He has acquired two production Night-Ops Gladius lights, which he will naturally bring with him for our perusal. Not only will these two lights be passed around all day long, but he will be selling them at a nice discount to any attendee who wants one. List is $250, and his price will be $205. You may pay with credit card, check, money order, or cash. No sales tax will be collected, and you save on shipping. So bring lots of funds with you! Steve is already an authorized Blackhawk dealer, so he will have a strong tie with the Night-Ops people too. If the demand for the Gladius is high, he will stock them as a regular item. I think that he wants a lot of feedback from us before he makes a decision on this matter. So let's work out that light hard, and see if all of the claims are accurate. If it can hold up to tactical use with firearms, then I am sure that it can survive the handling (and hopefully mishandling) that we will be subjecting it to.

Re: PF4 - NJ, NY, PA, CT area get together - INFO

Wow, that sounds great. If I can sell something else I would love to get the Gladius. Now what am I willing to part with /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: PF4 - NJ, NY, PA, CT area get together - INFO

Hehe, nice teaser Milky, but I seem to remember you telling me about that earlier... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I still would like to see it, of course! And yes, I've got a whole pile of ammo cans for you, and I'm gonna try to get some more, maybe do a handout thing with them. In other words, I'm definately coming!

I'm even working on a spotlight mod myself, which was inspired by you, Ginseng, and those magic glowing things you gave me last time. Cramming 21 18650 cells into the oddly shaped battery area was easy enough to figure out, but wiring it up is giving me a headache! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I'm really hoping to have it ready to go before PF4. I hope you do end up making it there! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
