Please! Diagnose My Surefire A2 For Me :)

I have had an A2 for years. I just noticed that when I use the tail switch, it works fine. Push in a bit, get the LED's, push harder get the incan. Great. However, when I screw down the tail cap tight, while I DO get the LED's, I don't get the incan UNLESS I ALSO push in the tail switch. Any ideas?

Also, I may be very unobservant, but is there supposed to be a "flat" portion on the threads which the head screws onto? I guess I just never noticed.

Have you tried cleaning the threads and applying some fresh lubricant? Might help.

This might sound like a stupid suggestion but have you tried fresh batteries? when I got my 4 flats A2 it was a store display model. the incan didnt light up.

Also you might need a new tailcap. I think I had the same problem as you did and I called SF, they sent me a new tailcap.

Fresh batteries doesn't tend to make a difference. The problem crops up every now and then for me too, usually after there has been a build-up of pocket fluff and generally gunk in the thread of the tailcap.

It is the tailcap switch. It is not pusing down enough to allow the incan to work. Check the tailcap out. I have not had mine for awhile so I can not remember some of the details of the switch. However, like many of the SF switches, usually a part of the contact area of the switch is pushed down too far and will not make that contact that you need . Look down at the switch and see if you can lift up part of the switching mechanism. Other than that, contact js, and relay your problem to him.

I would look inside that tailcap because the small tabs on the contact ring break off. It may not allow contact to be made when screwed down without the extra force from pushing the tailcap further.

There are 3 small chrome tabs that look like fingers. If you've had it for a long time, they maybe broken. Surefire can warranty the tailcap for you. I have several L1's and A2's that have 1 of the tabs broken off, but still function because there are two still functioning.

Look at this photo. The small finger-like tab that you see here is complete and unbroken. It usually breaks right at the sharp bend.

...and if those tabs have been flattened, use a toothpick to bend them upwards a bit.
