Police probe lasers aimed at Sea-Tac planes

pardon my english :

Bah ... i dont know whats worse , wicked lasers selling so called "death ray light sabers" or the media and the authorotys actually falling for it. Come on people , these handheld lasers are no toys and should be used by responsable adults only .. but they aren't KLINGON DISRUPTORS either.

At any distance these laser pointers still fan out (cheap optics) dust in the atmosphere furthere decreases the power and then actually hitting the eye of a pilot (and keeping it there for more then a few microseconds) is impossible with a 50$ handheld pen laser. And i think most pilots have 2 eye's so you would have to repeat that impossible task again to completly disable the pilot .... and then the copilot.

So as far is a can reason you might as well wave a magic wand at the plane , say "sim sala bim" and hope the plane is struck by lightning because of your magic.

Granted , you might be able to distract a "noob" pilot , but you could do that with any super bright lightsource / flare.

If i had a subscription on a newspaper that came with a story that a plane almost was shot down with a wicked death star laser i would cancel immidialtly . im not paying for distorted unrelyable gossip. Who knows what other crap they are feeding me.

ending my rant now...

bk227865 ... apparently a lot of folks have a different opinion, and especially the fear-factor might play an important role here. Fact is ... this time, lasers aren't very well accepted in the public, and tight regulations are likely to be passed to restrict their trade and use even further.
Rants like yours won't help here except to put some oil in the fire ...

What that guy did in Seattle was stupid, but to get causght was even dumber. He must have lased plane after plane from a static location. He was bound to get caught.
