A question for someone with a good understanding of electronics.

I have a Jetbeam III M. This light has a buck driver which feeds the led 1000ma (I think???) from a 2.7V-15V source. I prefer to use an 18650 in this light. Because the driver has no boost capabilities, the light seems to go into direct drive once the battery voltage reaches the Vf of the led. When I have used 2x16340 in this light, the output seemed to be regulated for a much longer period of time.

Initially, my thought was that I would simply start using 2x16340 instead of 1x18650, but the energy density of a single 18650 far surpasses that of 2x16340. So, my preference would be to use a high capacity 18650 and implement an additional boost driver between the battery and the Jetbeam buck circuit. Im thinking about using a GD1000 for this purpose.

Does this sound like a possibility? Or do I just sound like a moron?

Based on what I have been able to measure, the jetbeam circuit never seems to draw more than 900ma from a single 18650. When the battery is fully charged, the circuit converts the 4.2v@900ma from the battery into 3.79V@1000ma (estimate). But the output seems to drop rather quickly from there.

So what Im thinking is that it might be possible to use the GD1000 to supply the Jetbeams driver with a constant 1000ma power supply, while sucking every last useable bit of voltage out of a protected 18650.

Any thoughts on this?

If not, I guess Ill just have to take the risk of damaging the GD1000 in order to find out...
