Just wondering if anybody knows where to get round power cable in the UK. What I'm looking for is twin conductor cable in a round outer casing (so that it's easy to seal in a grommet). Ideally I want this to be as thin and light as possible, though it needs to be able to handle up to 1.5A. Got some nice cable I cut off a Lumicycle battery, which is a little over 4mm diameter, with red and black conductors inside - ideally I'd like to get some more of that, but no idea where I'd get that from. The nearest I've found is 3A mains cable, but that's a bit thinker than I'd like (and I'd also prefer red/black to brown/blue, but that's not crucial!)

You could use something like 4-core burglar alarm cable and double up the cores. It is round with about a 3.5mm outer diameter. Each core is rated at 1A, so you should be ok current wise with paralleled cores. I don't think you will find mains flex rated at less than 3A because that is the smallest fuse available for plugs.

Maplin will cut burglar alarm cable (I don't suppose you want a reel).
TLC do it by the metre too.

Thanks for the tip. I guess 4 core makes more sense in terms of utilisation of the area of a round outer (looked in Maplin, but didn't spot that)!

The only reason I mentioned 4 core is because there isn't one with fewer cores. Burglar alarm sensors on double-pole wiring use 4 cores so it is the smallest one available. The code is XR89W if that helps. Depending on your current draw, length and diameter requirements, the 6-core paralleled would give you lower voltage drop.

Maplin is useful but they have a much smaller range of components than they used to (I used to work weekends there when I was at college).

Well having checked the specs, each core on that alarm cable is 7/0.2mm. The Maplin 3A figure-8 power cable I have been using for ages is 14/0.19, so 2 cores of the alarm cable is actually slightly more area of copper than that.

I was thinking of getting 6 core anyway, and using the spare cores for additional signals given the option.
