I have a two battery C sized Maglite flashlight that I bought a $15 Nite Ize 1 Watt LED upgrade for it good for 2 to 6 cells, so it must have pulse width modulation and a feed back loop.
I Keep it on my desk next to my computer, and I was able to find the flashlight when the blackout happened.
We are in the middle of snow storm here in Seattle, and it is very cold.
I was able to find my wife with my flashlight, and help her find her cell phone and her flashlight.
I did not worry about running down the batteries, because of LED efficiency.
