just got off the phone w/ matt from emissive energy. he was interested in the results of my torture test and the leak i discovered.

he suggested that there might not have been a leak at all, rather the water was merely condensation from the freezing/unfreezing process. sounds plausible.

but here's the great part. he offered me a new light if id ship the old one back so he could test it and see if that really was the culprit.

all after id frozen it, run over it, and dropped it numerous times. in my book this is as good as customer service can get.

so to anyone who might not have an x5t, i say get one. if i cant break it (it still works and does not leak outside of being frozen) then it gets my recommendation.

BTW, matt didnt care at all i had driven over it w/ my car. he said it was designed for that kind of pressure.

I can only speak for the original X5 (I call it the Inova "Classic"). This was a break-through product of a unique design and brightness before Luxeons came on the scene.

It is still an excellent product and equal or superior to some of the contemporary LS lights, especially in terms of construction and water resistance (waterproof).

It's a pity that Inova took the X5 out of production (I assume that still applies), because it had some definite advantages over its more contemporary sibling.

Glad to hear you're getting good customer service. We see too little of that these days.

Unless the water you saw in the unit was very minimal, I doubt it was condensation. The light has minimal air volume, so it's not likely much water could have been condensed from it.

Almost picked up the X5t myself the other day at the Discovery Store. They were $39.95, but they only had blue. Prefer white myself.

I was at Fry's the other day and they had a good supply of these lights. Both body colors and LED colors of white, blue, green, and red. Price was $39.95. I picked up a silver body/white LED unit for my collection.

I find it easier to work with than my old style model (which has blue LED's and also came from the Discovery Store). Of course I still like the old style unit too! I just hope the new unit does not suffer from the issues that some have reported.

I think the tail cap switch is rather pointless. the x5t is suspose to be 15% brighter than the original due to better heat transfer so thats a good thing. There are a lot of reports of x5t's breaking from simple drops. Maybe there was just a bad batch? anyway I'm happier with my opalec and arc-ls.
