Predictions: the next ten years

I predict I will still be unsatisfied with LED tint and scrounging to find a lifetime supply of all of the incans I missed out on before I got into flashlights.

Maybe not in ten years' time, but within 20 years or so I predict we'll have the first prototype of relatively lightweight, night-vision eyeglasses that eliminate the need for flashlights, at least insofar as object detection and identification are concerned. Color rendition, not so much...

  • USB (or wireless) charged lights with integral cells will become the dominant energy storage topology
  • Disposable lights will see a revival or three as some novel technology drives their adoption
  • 3x AAA zoomies will continue to be A Thing™
  • 3D metal printing will grab some of the high-end custom light market
  • Some of the matrix systems seen in high-end adaptive automotive headlights will migrate to the flashlight market
  • "Tactical" will continue to be used to describe almost anything other than actual tactical lights
  • Flashlights may assume some pocket projector functions
  • 'bay and 'zon sellers will stop calling every LED an 'XML-T6' or just 'T6' within the decade
  • Incandescent lights may see a revival - particularly if battery technology lurches forward in terms of energy density

" Disposable lights will see a revival . . . . "

Correct me if I'm wrong, but
aren't the hot new RovyVon lights
considered to be "Disposable" ? ? ?

So many glowing reviews on them,
that I just had to order one myself,
a couple days ago !

Aurora A8x (Nichia/UV)
arriving from Hong Kong next month.

On a long enough timeframe, everything is disposable. RovyVon products might not be readily user-serviceable but that's not necessarily 'disposable' in my book.

I was thinking single-use flashlights ala the sealed affairs that the battery brands introduced in the late 80s/early 90s. A new battery tech, some increased in LED ruggedness that will allow them to be absurdly bright to the point that they burn out around end of battery life, or just the market's enduring love for novel throwaway devices may drive it.
