I think this has been mentioned once or twice.
But I haven't seen any pictures yet. Thought I'd post one for anyone who interested.

Eight superbright wide-angle LEDs are designed to allow the user to switch between 8, 5, 3 or 1 LED.

Sounds like the same basic functionality as a Septor headlamp... Almost seems like a step backward with a dimmable Luxeon headlamp on it's way from Streamlight.

What would be nice is if someone could get a Luxeon to mimic the beam profile of a 5mm LED - which has a beautiful combination of both flood and throw. That would give greatly improved color and more efficient output.

If you try using a reflector, you get a cone of light which cuts off your peripheral vision. And by the time you get done roughing up the surface, I wonder how efficient it really remains. Also, none of the optics I've tried will give you a nice focused flood like a 5mm. I tried the Fraen medium beam, but it isn't smooth. Fraen wide beam is much smoother, and makes an excellent area light, but not much throw. A switchable mix of something like LD with NX-05 for throw, and Fraen wide beam for wide flood would be ideal, but I'm not sure how you'd package it. I'm considering trying Fraen medium with write-right, but I don't have any of that stuff yet.

So the quest continues. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

One great thing about this light is that it's regulated. To me, that makes it very desirable. Most multi-led lights fade way too fast. With 8 led's on full brightness, it should be very useful for hiking. And at reduced brightness levels it should be great for working around the house, even during the day.

Does anybody have an expected price for this light?

I saw it at Outdoor Retailer... it has two buttons:

1 to switch from 8, 5, 3, 1 LED's

and another to power down the output 50% for each LED mode (8,5,3,1) and to a flash mode.

It was very bright on high 8's and looked to have a nice beam. The head unit is actually very small considering all that is in there. Not much bigger than an Aurora.

Very exciting news for hikers and climbers...how would it compare to the PT Matrix 2 and Yukon HL? I'm wondering what the folks at PT are thinking in terms of product placement. Also, wondering if the upcoming Streamlight will be cooled and driven to high enough power to make it brighter than the current Luxeon headlights that are commonly available through BD or PT.
