Problem with CMG Infinity Ultra

I bought 7 Infinity Ultras, 6 for gifts and one for me. The one I opened has an intermittant problem with flickering then going off. I've cleaned the contact area of the head with a pencil eraser and the inside of the tube with contact cleaner. Still does it. Doesn't seem to be a continuity problem anyway, since when it cuts off, just turning the head a little won't make it come on. You have to turn it off, then back on.

Now I'm not sure about the 6 I bought as gifts. I guess I'll have to open all of them and test them.

Has anyone else had significant problems with the Ultra?

Thanks,
Steve Ferguson (a newbie)

I had one with what sounds like the same problem, and as documented in this thread, I sent it back for a no-hassle replacement.

Mine was an Ultra-G that went back to CountyComm, if yours is a plain Ultra, I'd get in touch with CMG for replacement.

Good luck,

Dave

ferguson,

Not with an Ultra but with an Infinity. Same problem as yours and I tried the same fix plus 3 different type batteries. I contacted customer service at CMG, explained the problem and got a replacement in no time with no questions. 2 emails with apologies followed later. I have no qualms with buying any of their lights again (I have 2 Ultra's and 3 Infinities).

CMG does have a good warranty program; take advantage of it and get ahold of them about your pooped out Ultra.
I've never had any of the Infinity series of lights go out on me, but ya never know...

I had one ( my EDC) that didn't have any potting material. The board flexed until some PC lands broke. Instead of sending it back for repair I took it apart and did some machining on the head and inserted a MadMax WO, Q3 LS and a half sphere lens. Now an outstanding light.

I have a dead UltraG. As received it was much less brighter than the other (I bought 2), and got dimmer and dimmer and completely died. (I was going to say "got dimmer..." but the good one definately isn't "dim." /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif) That was a couple weeks ago and haven't gotten around to looking up who I got it from and getting an RMA.

I have 1 Ultra and 1 regular Infinity and don't have this problem. Yes, do take advantage of the excellent customer service.

Quality Control methods use a Random Statistical Sampling of a manufacturing lot, unless otherwise specified. So bad ones do slip through. This is why warranties exist (one reason).

Be sure to check out your other ones, before you contact customer service.

CMG has a very good replacement policy. Contact them and arrange for an exchange.

I've had the same problem with one of my infinitys and one of my infinity ultras. The negative contact is made at the ring around the outside of the head, and it seems that the crimp doesn't like to stay crimped. I was able to fix mine by increasing the crimp with a hammer, although a warranty replacement is probably a better idea.
