Sold/Expired Protective Bezels for Aspherical Lenses Interest Thread

There have been a number of threads where members tried various focal lengths of the aspheric lenses. This was my shootout of the original Aspherics (beamshots in post #31).

There is a companion review thread I did with more beamshots of the DEFT compared to these Aspherics in this thread.

The best we tried of about 10 various FL's was the now $28 MG 37mm Focal Length (#01-LAG-123from MG). I think the KD FL is 34mm, so the LAG-001 you are looking at is going to be a bit shorter. The FL and shape/thickness of the lens can matter to various degrees, and I wouldn't recommend people locking in on that 33mm FL model until someone buys and tries one. Originally the LAG-123's were very cheap $8 from Surplus Shed, but we all depleted their stock.

Nano, I think change my order to one KD and 3 MG LAG-123 (instead of 2 + 2). Thanks!

I know some of you have expressed interest in the more aggressive crenellated look, but for now I need to focus on what the majority of members have requested in order to keep this project from becoming vaporware. I to am still interest in doing a run of extreme crenellated bezels, but this will have to be a consideration for a future run. For now I'm willing to more forward with these two basic models in order to narrow down the project scope. Continue to feel free in offering your input.

Although I understand, it's a pity the more aggressive bezel will not be offered now. Nevertheless put me down for one of the crenellated version. Please don't drop the slots.
It would be appreciated if you could post a drawing of the more aggressive design you have in mind. 😗

JohnTZ, I think AlexGT pointed out the most significant feature; having to unscrew the head less in order to achieve good focus when using the MG 01 LAG 010 lens because of it's shorter 33mm focal length.

However, the 33mm FL does make the lens center thicker by 2mm, but I have already compensated for that in latest design revision.

For now I'll put you down for Qty one 010 just let me know if you change your mind.

Thanks nano thats perfect.:grin2:

Nanomiser:

If you're set on putting in slots, may I suggest that the slots be made big enough to install trits, like the original design:

Personally, I think I prefer the crenelations without slots:

(Offset picture is intentional.)

However, I understand the need to standardize the designs to something everyone can accept. Most people should be able to find one of the two models you suggested as acceptable.

If the final price point is set at $25, I'll take one of each. If it is closer to $50, then I'll stick with my original order.

Thanks!

Lux First I want to say thanks for providing the great reference threads; I really appreciate all the work you do here.

Your point of caution is reasonable and I agree that it would be helpful to have some sort of quantification of the MG 01 LAG 010 lens performance compared to the MG 01 LAG 123. Can anyone shed some light on this before we all jump into this group buy and possibly end up disappointed? My choice was simply based on the fact that I already have a couple of MG 123 and my assumption that the only critical difference was the 33mm FL would be advantageous with less head rotations to fully focus.

Order changed to (1) KD & (3) MG

Icarus Order modified from (1-2) to (1) and I plan on keeping the slots. The only rendition of a more aggressive crenellation I can offer was already posted at the beginning of this thread. As I previously mentioned, we may get an opportunity to explore a more aggressive design later on.

JohnTz You're welcome.

J3004 For now I do plan to make a version of this bezel to fit a KD lens, but that largely depends on number of KD bezels ordered which will affect price. Pricing has not been established just yet because I am not going to submit drawings for quote until we all get through this design review process.

In the introduction of this thread I stated that I was targeting a price range of $25 to $45 depending on materials, style and finish. What I left up to member interpretation was the model of bezel those prices would likely apply to.

The $25 would probably pay for a bare aluminum non-finned, non-slotted / holed, crenellated bezel for either a MG or KD lensor a bare aluminum Flat-Top bezel for the same lenses. The $45 price would hopefully be enough to cover a polished stainless steel Finned-Slotted or Holed, Crenellated bezel for either a MG or KD lens. All other variations would fall somewhere in between.

The machinist that I have already contacted is located in Beijing, China and is offering his services at $20/hour. So if I place a good size order with his shop then chances are good that I will be able to stay within this price range.

1dash1 Forgive my ignorance, but what are trits? Making the slots longer is not a problem at all. I was thinking that if a member want to they would have the option of filling them with glow epoxy. Again, the price is not set or established at this point. It all depends on the final quote from the machine shop.

Trit = Tritium vials, radioactive glow in the dark vials

The "standard" size is 1.55mm x 5mm, as sold by B@rt in the Marketplace

1dash1 Just out of curiosity, how did you manage to remove the slots from my bezel model?

Thank you for the clarification.

When I get a chance, I'll revise the model with larger slots and see what it looks like. What kind of fit tolerance will work with these Tritium vials? I'm assuming these vials would be held in by an adhesive, correct?

Norland optical adhesive gives the best results but epoxies can be used
as well.
I dont have any lights with tritium slots in them, so I cant give you any
measurements.
Maybe someone else with a light with slots can give you some measurements ?

I cut & pasted your original drawing into Windows Paint. Edited and saved file. Uploaded the file to my Photobucket account, then linked the image to the message.

Nano, thanks for your kind comments. The 33mm FL model may be just fine, but the LED surface will need to be 4mm closer to the bottom of the lens. I don't remember all the specific sizes that people tried, nor if they were all of the same glass quality as the LAG-123 (from MG & version from SS). I think you or someone interested in that 33mm model should spend the $28 before making the head. I'm not sure why people want that one since it is the same price as the 123 which we know works well.

Unscrewing the head with the LAG-123 37mm was because I ground down the bottom lens edge to make it fit inside the recessed lip of mag head for the sole purpose of not having lens protrude when standing up with KIU's bezel. Because I seated the lens deeper than Mac's/Ledean's default version, I now had to screw the head out to compensate for the lens being closer to LED.

If KIU bezel had been made 5mm longer, there would have been no need for me to do the grinding...which your mod is addressing! Otherwise, the 37mm LAG-123 seemed to be a perfect focus position in terms of head seated back near bottom of threads with Mac's or Ledean's. It was just that you had to put up with the glass lens front sticking out, having to lay the mag on its side, and hoping it didn't roll off the table (which mine did several times).

In terms of crenelations, slots, finning, etc., I'll defer to your decisions and the majority wishes. It is your project, so make it the way you like it...the main thing is to consider having the protruding glass shielded (including not having slots at glass level) as we already discussed.

As per Lux's comments, please change my lens to the 123 for the group buy. Lux actually takes the time to do multiple comparisons between different vendors products.

I'll 2nd that motion. That makes allot of sense Lux and eliminates the possibility of having to deal with any geometric difference between the two lenses if they exist.

I will start a second lens group lens buy list for the MG 01 LAG 123 and hopefully evryone will follow suit.
