Pseudo-Ruhla watch? (and other automatics)

Re: Pseudo-Ruhla watch?

Both Citizen and Seiko sell automatic watches starting at a third of that price.

Try a Google search with "Seiko automatic watch" and then with "Citizen..." and you will see.;)

You're absolutely right!!! I narrowed my choices down to the following..

1. Seiko SKX173 Automatic

2. Citizen BN0000-04H Eco-Drive

The Citizen is the cheaper of the two. My gut is telling me to get the Seiko. Wise decision? This is going to be my poorman's Marathon until later this year.

I went against the grain and ordered the SKX173 tonight through Amazon.com I specifically chose the "sold and shipped by Amazon" choice due to the fact that I know it will be a real Seiko and not a Feiko. Some prices through 3rd party stores in Amazon.com seemed too good to be true. I passed those up. Trying to save a buck or two might haunt me later on should a problem arise.
I also ordered a black 22mm Maratac Zulu 4-ring band from MWR (Broadarrow.net). Can't wait. I should get the watch on Wednesday and the band later this week. I'm excited. This is my first Seiko and automatic at that!!

:bow::devil:

 Awesome choice, man. I have a 007 (same as the 173 but with round hour markers) I wear on a black zulu. I should have gotten the 173 though, because I like the look of the square markers better. You will not be disappointed!

The way the second hand sweeps instead of "ticks", the musical sound of the movement when you hold it up to your ear and the sound of the 120 click bezel, the solid weight on your wrist will almost make you forget the fact that the watch gains between 10-30 seconds a day. At least you'll be early instead of late. It's just a fact of life with automatic watches. If you think about it, it is really cool though, a machine with no circuits or batteries, a plain old mechanical device using gears that keeps time. Seiko makes a great automatic diver's watch, I don't think you can beat it for the money.

I am REALLY tempted to mod the 173 into a pseudo-GSAR. :naughty: I'm really not trying fake the funk... Call it an inspiration.
Already got a hold of an MKII authorized assembler.. Price is VERY reasonable. :twothumbs

BTW talking of mechanical watches, do you know that timepieces that tend to go slightly fast can be corrected simply finding the right position when you lay them down in the evening?

As I have already said in a previous post some time ago, most watches tend to go slightly faster when laid face up while they tend to slow down a bit when the crown is down. You should try first with the crown down then with the crown up and finally in a vertical position. You can easily recover 2-3 seconds per day.
I remember quite well that this trick used to be written in the Rolex instructions very many years ago and I learned it there. It still works today but not really on all movements.
Because of differences in today's watches it is advisable to try all the above positions before deciding which is the best one for your own watch. All my watches are fast (I prefer them like that) and to slow them down I need to set them in different positions: for instance I have a Reverso that needs to stay face down and an IWC that likes better the crown down position.

Excellent choice.
I have the Pseudo_Rhula and a few Seikos including the black monster, Ti-Samurai and skx 007 which is the same as the watch you have only with rounded dial markers instead of rectangular.

The Pseudo Rhula is a great watch for the money, very hefty and uses Swiss ETA movement and I like mine very much but it's not in the same class as the Seiko if you're looking for a serious watch that will last and not let you down.

That Seiko you have has one of the smoothest and best made bezels on any watch and great luminous markers, if I had to get ride of all my dive watches bar one it would probably be the 007 I'd keep. (Actually I'd keep my Samurai as my Mother bought it for me and she's kill me if I sold it) :sick2:
You made a good choice, enjoy your watch.

Oh typically it will run a little fast especially until you've warn it for a while and like others I prefer my watches to run a little fast than slow.
I did get mine calibrated a while ago and it gained 2 seconds in a week which is pretty amazing. I think it's about 5 seconds fast a day now which is okay with me.
:)
