I have a 2xAA Quark Tactical that I'm looking to buy a 18650 tube for. What I want to know is:

Is the 0.9v-4.2v head compatible with UNprotected 18650's/17670's?

I don't currently have any protected 18650's/17670's, so I'm just curious. It'll let me finally have a use for them, since I only have 1 light that I can use with the 80-100 unprotected 17670's&18650's I have.

I just don't want to spend $25 to have a battery tube I can't use for several months before I can get some protected 18650's. I could just spend $20 on getting my 6P bored, so I can use Moddoo's triple XP-E dropin, which seems to have an automatic voltage cutoff.

The thing is that I know that the board has a protection circuit for Nimh's (light output suddenly drops when my old Nimhs hit 1.2 volts), so I thought maybe the output would do the same when it hits near 2.7-3.0v for the 18650. Haven't tried it with alkalines yet, though.

There is no NiMH protection either. Your old NiMH just can't hold up to the load and can't supply the current. That's why the output drops.

Edit:
I also bet that is 1.2v open circuit, not under load.

I would suggest getting the L-mini II instead. It has a protection circuit built in that will turn the light off when the battery voltage gets too low. It also automatically switches to the low mode when the cell is running low, so you know to change it.
