This is starting to get a bit bothersome, so not only do i have to buy different cells for this light, i also have to make sure i get the latest version.... Is there any way i can make sure i get the latest version, besides asking the shop i will be getting it to take it out and test it prior to sending ?
that turn-on flash, IMO, is really *NOT* much of an issue. it is just that a "flash" or "blink" - very short duration.
in situations where you want to compromise your current dark adaptation as little as possible (hey,...it's gonna' be compromised as a white light is being turned on with the intention of it being on for a least a second or two anyways to use it at what 12lm, IIRC, for the P2D-Q5 LO mode) there are two solutions, both of which i tried:
1) direct the bezel of the light (the "business" end) down to the ground when switching the light on.
2) close one's eyes for a quarter of a second when switching the light on.
both have worked fine for me.
i have both older P2D/L1D/L2D/P3D and much newer Q5 versions of these lights. honestly, i can't tell you which ones flash and which ones don't - it's such a minimal aspect to the use of these lights that i haven't bothered to pay att'n to which ones do it and which ones don't. proof positive, in my case at least, that both of the above mentioned numbered solutions to the issue work well.
the way i look at it is that often >99.9% of the time or >99.0% of the time for shorter duration uses (i.e. after the first 1/4sec) after activating the light, the light works precisely as i would expect it to. so, i ask myself, why should i care about that <0.1% of the time (or even 5.0% if the light is used only for maybe 5sec - still that same 1/4sec flash when the light is first turned-on). i typically call that majoring in the minors.
i wouldn't let that turn-on flash deter anyone fr/purchasing some Fenix lights.
oh,...and to put this Post in its proper perspective, this word of advice comes fr/an old, anal-retentive, OCD, everything-ought-to-be-perfect engineer!
