I just bought an A2 on ebay, and am wondering if it's a counterfeit or genuine. Two questions:

1. The LEDs (red) have dark circles when used alone. Is this supposed to happen with the A2?

2. When the incan light is on, the red LEDs are also going at the same time. Is that normal? (it gives the light a reddish tinge). Otherwise, the white light seems pretty clear, without spots.

Any other tips on distinguishing a counterfeit would be helpful.

Thanks for your help.

Welcome to CPF!

I don't think I've ever seen a counterfeit A2. The LED circles sound pretty normal, they can be frosted to make a smoother beam if you'd like. The LEDs do run with the bulb, but you shouldn't see too much of a discoloration, and it should lessen the farther you look..

the red LEDs have a characteristics such as rings and hotspots, this is consistent to almost all colored LEDs

when the A2's main beam is engaged, the LED is supposed to remain lit. Perfectly normal

I'd recommend reading [or viewing] this thread
A2: greenLED's comparison of LED colors

congratulations on your buy:wave:

Congrats on the A2 and getting a discount on a Surefire product!:sssh:
enjoy your A2, I got mine on ebay and it's been GREAT!

Appreciate your help in easing my fears. Purchased the A2 after reading threads on this forum. Didn't have a chance to try it out first, so I was unaware of how it worked. Will spend some time with it and see how I like it. Thanks much.

Yep sounds exactly like my RED LED A2 - I sanded the red LEDs for a smooth beam - this does a great job!

You've got yourself a nice A2!!! enjoy it and stop worrying about things that only spoil the party for you. If you are like A LOT of us here, you'll treasure your light in no time. See that beautiful incan beam ? it wont get any dimmer through the run.

Why do the LEDs stay on? Surely they get completely swamped by the incandescent beam, and just use battery life unnecessarily?

I;m sure it's just that its simple to leave them on. Turning them off would have required a more complex switch. This is probably the same basic two stage switch they use in other lights.

I doubt if the drain of the LEDs reduces the incan runtime by more than a couple of minutes, if that. Runtime on incan is one hour, LEDs 20 hours :)

Whether 'tis easier or not - the primary benefit/feature of having the LEDs remain on is that in the rare event of the incandescent bulb breaking you're not left in the dark.
