After a bad 6P experience around 1994 I'm thinking about getting a Surefire or two (or eight

)

Which finishes do these lights have (L-R), in this pic.

Left = HA3, in "Millenium Grey"
Middle = GunMetal anodising
Right = Black anodised

I'm not sure what anodising levels GM and black are on the E2.

The HA3 (Hard Anodised - level 3 ) is a very very tough coating, which comes in various shades, from true grey to khakhi green. You can scrape concrete with it, while hardly marking the torch. It's tougher than the Temper 8 Aluminium it's coated onto.

GM, or GunMetal is a violet-tinged anodising, which does not have the toughness of HA - but looks jolly nice. I think that it's level 2.

Black - I believe that this is level 2, not HA, though Al might comment on that.

(The SF 8AX and 9AN come in HA3 black.)
(The Mag-Lites are level 2, I believe, not nearly as tough as level 3)

What was your bad experience with a 1994 6P - please give details !

SureFire HA is Hard Anodised (anodized) to Military Level III Specification (U.S. Military).

SureFire HA is "Millennium Grey" with the exception of the 8AX-BK & 9AN-BK that are also HA.

I believe that all other anodised coatings are Level II.

Unless you want a specific colour anodising for looks etc, I would go for HA for function over form. I like HA. Always have.

My 12PM have aged so fast with it's Black Anodising being worn. The Millennium Series lights and E2 are looking practically new with no signs of wear.
I am not known for my kind treatment of flashlights and I have nothing bad to say about HA.

It worked fine the first week and then it just had very inconsistent reliability.

I was young and impatient and sent it back. Back then they did not have much to choose from.

I might have missed one or two. I think the M series and E series is the only ones they didn't have back then.

Looks like the 6 series, 9 series, four rechargeable, and a few oddball models plus lots of acc. for them.

I stand by my first statement of not much (compaired to now). What could be found was going to be close to msrp unlike now where we can find them for competive prices.

There's the 6,7,8,9,L series, + 6S,6B,3D. The only lights not available back then compared to now is the E1/E2, the M series and the 10X. So you couldn't get the few lights "beefed up" lights back then compared to now.

The M series is incredible though, built like a tank. I think the bulb technology prohibitive back then. Now we have the 500lm Lithium and Rechargeable available....imagine in another 5 years or so!

The prices weren't that bad at Gun Shows back then, but those are a dying breed nowadays. Oh how I miss the Great Western Gun show with 3000+ vendors!
