Ok, I see Staples has the Magellan Maestro™ 3100 on sale for $150. It offers "turn by turn" instructions. Today at Costco I was looking at a Magellan model for $200 and it states that it has "text to speech" capabilities. What is the difference? It has to speak for turn by turn instructions as well, I assume.

Turn by turn (as the 3100 has) will tell you..

"In one-half mile, turn right"

The text-to-speech will say

"In one-half mile, turn right onto state road 25"

Being able to actually pronounce street names costs a little bit more..

Thanks for your reply. For myself I think I'd certainly want the text to speech factor. As the screen size isn't huge on many and you're trying to see where you are driving, I think the voice features are very important.

You definately want a text-to-speech unit; just note that these units sometimes mispronounces street names. My unit (Garmin Nuvi 350) has even pronounced "Dr." ("Drive") as "Doctor" (i.e. "Take ramp, on right, to Bundy Doctor North").
