I have a shortened mini-mag pro plus. It is now a 1aa. It won't turn on with a 1aa alkaline. I know I have to get a rechargeable cell to run it but which one? I was thinking a protected 14500 used responsibly so as not to blow the led. Keep in mind I am a noob when it comes to rechargeables. Thanks everyone

Unless that light is specified to take up to ~4V, using a 14500 (Li-ion cell, that is) is not a responsible way to operate that light.

Can you test individual parts somehow? (battery contacts, switch, head, whatever). Did the light work before? (as 1x AA, that is). Or was it modified somehow and now you can't get it to work?

I had it cut down. It ran fine on 2aa. I just never got around to really figuring out the battery situation after I had it modded. I was recommended lifep04 14505 cells but the mah is so much less that I don't think they will work, and also I can't find much info about these types of cells. The lights voltage calls for 3.0 volts. Is there any rechargeables in that range?

Yeah, the lifepo4 may be your best bet in a rechargeable. Nominal voltage is 3.2v, max is about 3.6. Two fresh alkaline cells with produce 3.2v, so it's a pretty close match. I'd be a bit concerned about using them at full charge, but it's certainly better than a 4.2v lithium ion.

The mah doesn't matter about whether or not they will work, it just determines how long they will last.

Anybody have a good recommendation on which brand to get? I found some tengergy brand for 1.88 a cell. Will those work? I also read a thread on here about some at Walmart and Home Depot made for solar lights. Might just go with those. This isn't really an edc light just something to show off to friends and family.

Try a Google image search for "14500 lifepo4 review" (without quotes, just those keywords), and see what you can find.

I'm looking for something similar. But it seems 550~600 mAh is about the best you can find for this type of cell, even if the label suggests higher capacity. And many no-names around, of which most will be crap but some might actually be quite good... Typical application is solar-powered garden lights.

That said, I'd be petty happy if I could find a few decent quality LiFePO4 cells in 14500 format, that actually hit 600 mAh (equivalent to ~1600 mAh NiMH, so not too bad). Maybe I'll hit some garden centers or hardware stores, and check out their garden light section... ;)

Btw do you have a charger that can handle LiFePO4 cells?
