RadioShack does not recycle NiMh cells

Have you ever had batteries taken in for recycling put in the trash can?

I want to see how many people this happened to at any location.

I took four dead 2500 mAh Energizer AA cells into RadioShack in the Galleria Mall here in Johnstown. After I left the counter the IDIOT threw the cells into the trash can! I wanted to do the right thing for the environment, but they threw the batteries in the trash. I think I am going to report them to the RBRC on Monday.

Batteries Plus doesn't recycle NiMh either. It is only Lead acid, NiCad and LiIon that must get recycled, because they contain toxic substances.

According to the FAQs published by the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC), NiMH batteries are included in their program and RadioShack stores are listed as collection sites:

www.rbrc.org...consumer_faq.html

As well, the RadioShack corporate site claims both credit and major environmental kudos for recycling NiMH batteries:

I say report the bums...

Better yet would be to have a local television station set them up, I have no doubt that a video of a RadioShack employee casually tossing a bunch of recyclable batteries in the trash after they were entrusted to his or her care for recycling would make national news.

Even if it could only be picked up on a videophone, it would be great YouTube fodder which might still be picked up by the national networks. A good project for a couple of envionmentally conscious students...

Sure it was a trash can, and not a trash can they use to collect batteries? Did you check it to see if they had regular trash in it?

i wasnt paying attention,, but it would not be the first time.

when initiating a recycling program here for paper, plastic, metals, and glass, people were spending Hours sorting all the stuff out.
at 5am, the garbage truck would come by, toss it all in the same bin, and throw it in the landfill.
in a few months, they had sorted garbage trucks and the pre-sorted trash would go into pre-sorted containers in the truck, then off to recycle.
a few years later, they instituted the next miracle recyling program, and every recyclable from the consumer would be put in the SAME container, for a month or so , those truck would dump it off in the landfill.
now, all of that stuff gets resorted, and re-used.

there were just Times, when the company had to ketch up to the times, just like when consumers were still using CFC hairsprays long after thier discontinued use.

ya figure by the year 2010, they wont have HAL, but they will have this recycling OR seperate disposal worked out. these things take time, people resist change, but eventually adapt to the methods with no sweat off thier backs.

Tire Fire anyone?

ni-mhy is not recycled here yet, but HERE there is a different disposal location for electronic toxic nightmares.

Yes, I saw paper in the trash can. My cell phone does not have video, so that would be out of the question, but I could have one of the three local stations look into it. We have WJAC-TV 6 (NBC), WWCP-TV 8 (Fox), and WATM-TV 23 (ABC). I will try WJAC first since their transmitter covers the community the best.

Hi.

The local RS (AKA TheSourceCC) never recovered spent cells. The Prov govt has
had a plan for years and depots for battery recycling. There's even a surcharge
on batteries (like a soda can deposit).

However i am aware that RS (common knowledge) doesn't care about anything and throws out the spent cells (even their own on the shelf passed due cells).

That or they try to sell you a old cell as new. Just had such an occurance two days ago with A23 cells.

Thanks.

P.S> Yes NI-MH, LI-ion, alkaline, cell phones (inlcuding the whole telephone) are recycled.

I dropped off a variety of batteries at my local RS and twisted their arm to tell me the truth :poke: and they showed me a specially marked plastic bag with a load of old batteries in it. I trust them they know me well.
