I'm looking for a cool light for my seven year old son. Just trying to find something they would think was really cool. I've had some cheap LED lights for them, but they usually just break after while.

Requirements:

LED based light
Price: less than $50.00
Battery: Single Rechargeable preferred (i.e. 18650 or CR123 types)
Size: Small Compact (handheld say less than 5")
Features: Gotta be cool for 7 year old. Features are a plus!!! Multicolor might be cool. (Do they make police / emergency lights with red / blue light capabilities / flashing?)

Flood vs. Thrower: Not really important although a thrower would probably appeal more to a kid

Thanks much!

This is on the cheap side, but the Sipik SK68 could work. Single mode, 1 AA, zoomie light, so he can play with the focus if he wants to. From what I hear, quality is good for the price, and the price is under $10.

The Gerber Recon could also work. 1 AA battery and 4 different colors (R/G/B and white). Not the brightest, but has different colors.

Also check out some of the lights at shiningbeam and look into the budget lights section.

+1 on the sipik. I bought the 3-pack from meritline for my nephews as stocking stuffers this year. The youngest is at about that age. They can also run 14500, but I hear they get a little warm like that.

I've also bought them from dx, and always been happy but there's a link in the good deals thread in cpfmp for even cheaper on ebay.

I agree with the sipik. You wouldn't seriously let a 7 year old play with something with li-ions, would you?

I know this doesn't meet all the requirments, but I picked up one of these for my son who is 8. It has multicolors, even UV and a laser pointer. He and his friends think it is cool. Time will tell how it holds up buy we are going on 6 month now.

If I was with them the entire time, yes. If I were to hand it to them and walk away, no. I'll be gifting these with alkaline, but might get their dad some eneloops for his Cabellas 2xAA light. If Costco still has the big packs there would be plenty to go around.

Still my all-time kid's favorite: the Gerber Recon - 1xAA, colored lenses built in, 5MM LED that won't blind anyone, run it from a NiMH and it doesn't matter if they leave it on, ~$20.

18650 and RCR123A are lithium batteries. They can explode if not treated carefully. I would not give them as gifts or to children.

If the batteries drop below 2.7V they become damaged and will explode next time you try to charge them. A light left on overnight by a kid can easily drain the battery to the damaged level.

I suggest going with lights that use low self discharge NiMH AA. Usually sold as 'pre-charged'. CPF members prefer Eneloops. But in this case any brand will do.

Thanks for the tips.

Yeah, my kids would use these, but not when i'm not around. Usually when we do our night hikes in the evenings.
Even if the flashlights used alkaline batteries, they still wouldn't get to keep them as they lose and/or or break everything around.

I just like the rechargeable because most of my own flashlight collection uses those batteries and my family tend to be battery whores with alkalines with all their damn toys and so forth . . .

But good suggestions.

It's a bit larger than 5 inches, but the Fenix E21 is a well-made light - 2 x AA with two modes (high and low), bright and will last for years. Use it with some AA rechargeables and it's only about $32...
