Right guys, im fed up with my wife running all my primary cells down and the torches I have dont run long enough on rechargeable li-ion to work for her uses, 3+ hour walks in forests. urban areas.

Im thinking a nice straight forward 2 or 4 mode 2 or 4 cell nimh or li-ion flashlight with a nice neutral floody beam that can throw a lot of light when needed. To last at least 2 hours on high at 200 lumens minimum.

==================Flashlight Recommendation Checklist================

1) How would you prefer to purchase the light?
____This will be mail-order or Online (location doesn't matter).

2) Budget: An easy question, but you may change your mind after answering the rest! :)

____Up to $50.

3) Format:

____I want a flashlight (hand held/self contained).

4) Size:

____SMALL - Every day carry (4-7 inches).
____MEDIUM - Holster/belt ring carry. (>7 inches)

As small as a Maglite 2AA up to a Thrunite Catapult, more suited to smaller hands. No holster required, will be holding it while using it.

5) Emitter/Light source:

____LED (known for efficiency, longevity, and compactness)

I would like a neutral or warm tint with a relatively high cri

6) Manufacturer:

____I want to buy a light from a large/traditional manufacturer that is ready to go out of the box.

7) What power source do you want to use?

____I intend to use Rechargeable cells (NiMH or NiCD) based on the usual AAA/AA/C/D sized cells common to most stores.
____I intend to use Rechargeable cells based on less common formats (18500 or 18650 Li-Ion, RCR123, et-al).

Prefferabley 18650 Li-ion but rechargeable AA is OK

7a) If you have selected a rechargeable option

____I want a separate/stand-alone charger (this involves removing the batteries to charge)

8) How much genuine out the front (OTF) light do you want/need? Sometimes you can have too much light (trying to read up close up with a 100 lumen light is not a happy experience).

____I want to confidently walk around an unlit/unpaved rural area (60-150 lumens).
____I want to illuminate my entire backyard or a campsite (150-300 lumens).
____I want to illuminate an entire field, the neighbor's front yard several houses down, impress my friends and neighbors, etc. (300-700 lumens).

9) Flood vs Throw: Flood covers an area, Throw reaches out to a distance.

____Wide Throw: I want a beam with a noticeable hot-center for distance throw and a significant amount of "side-spill". Good for rough trail hiking, search and rescue, and general distance work.

9a) Distance: How far away will you typically need to see with this light (check all that apply)

____Less than 5 yards (looking for something inside a dark shed/garage/basement)
____5-20 yards(check out a noise in the backyard)
____30-50 yards(I have a big backyard)
____50-150 yards (I live in a very rural area/farm with wide open spaces)

10) Runtime: Not over-inflated manufacturer runtime claims, but usable brightness measured from first activation to 50% with new batteries (Measured on maximum continuous output).

____90-120 minutes (Runtime is moderately important, but still not critical As long as it has modes, Highest mode at least 200 Lumens with 90 minutes minimum runtime
____3 hours + (I critically need this light to run on max for extended periods in between battery changes/charges)As low as 60 lumens for 4 hours

11) Durability/Usage: Generally the old phrase "you get what you pay for" is very accurate for flashlights.

____Very Important (Camping, Backpacking, Car Glove-box).

12) Switch Size, Type, and location (choose all that apply):

____I want a forward clicky (Helpful for momentary activation and signaling).
____I want a momentary switch (Predominantly for use with signaling and short bursts of momentary light only).
____I want a body mounted switch (near the head, like on a Maglite).
____I want a tail mounted switch (found on the majority of today's high end lights).

13) User Interface (UI) and mode selection. Select all that apply.

____I want 2 light levels. (Brighter/short runtime and Dimmer/long runtime.)

14)Material/Finish/Coating

____Plastic/composite body (this may limit your choices significantly).
____Anodized Aluminum – either type II or III (Hard Anodized) (Aluminum, specifically HA, is the most common material/finish for today's higher end flashlights).

Nitecore P12? 6 hours at 210 lumens, 28 hours at 50 lumens, plus a 950 lumen turbo mode if needed. Tail clicky to turn on and off, side mounted switch to select modes. Can be found for roughly $50 give or take.

Alright thanks for the suggestion  Just had a quick look, form factor looks about right, could be bigger but no smaller I dont think. Multi modes is a big problem however, also bought some recent nitecores and wasnt impressed at all with build/beam quality. Sorry but it did tick most of the boxes

Any more suggestions

Any 2*8 18650 light should easily meet your runtime, but also a lot of the smaller single 18650 like the PD35 would even meet this, you could go bigger single cell for more range and no step downs (More thermal mass so MGS wont be putting sill 3min turbos on them).

I guess it depends on your budget but there is LOADS of choich in that meets your simple UI (I hate complicated UIs to) and long runtimes on higher modes, as you have allowed a fairly large size range so your certainly not pushing the bounderys of current torch tech.

If on a budget I would get a P60 sized host from solar force then get a drop in with 2/3 modes. You could go cheap here or you could upgrade to a Surefire host, and a custom dropin from Vihn.

Off the shelf lights might be harder to find excatly what you want but almost all the MFGs offer what your looking for, although the warm HCRI might be a problem with some of them (Hence why I suggested you go P60 route as a tripple 3 mode 219 droping would be perfect for you IMO, and would be nice and floody to.)

You proberly know all the main brands by now from looking at your fourm post count you have been around a while, but SWM/Surefire/olight/fenix should all have what your looking for, and many more besides.

I would personaly (Just my opion though) Aviod eagalTac as there lights are good, but there UI is complicated (at least one paper I cant get my head round it!!!) and I have read a few threads of iffy customer service, but that happens with every brand I guess, but there actualy lights ignoreing the UI do look very good.

If you have a silly budget Look at Lupine light, truely some awsome (AND EXPENSIVE) Lights, or you could always go custom.....you have so much choice its unreal!

P.s Look at the Solarforce Gladiator light, that along with a extended bezel ring is a mean flashlight, you could likely scare away a bear with just its look LOL...(Not implying anything, but Id feel happyer with this in my hand lol)

You mean.....

like this?!

With a similar form factor as the P12 above, I really like the Convoy lights.
You can select slight variations S2 through S8 AND you can choose how hard, or how lightly you want it driven, AND you can choose which bin and tint of the emitter.

fasttech dot com has them, for the most part, less than $22

This one in stainless is $26. Convoy S7 Cree XM-L T6-3C 523-Lumen 4800-5000K 2-Group 3/5-Mode LED Flashlight

These are the stats on the one I bought. My next one will be with a neutral tint. I hear that the T6-3C is beautiful.
Convoy S2 Cree XM-L U2-1B 1400ma 2-Group 3/5-Mode EDC LED Flashlight

To switch mode group: switch to low mode and wait for 5 seconds.
As soon as you notice a quick blink, half press the power switch
and mode group is then toggled.

Group 1 (5-Mode): Lo (5%) > Mid (40%) > Hi (100%) > Strobe > SOS;
Group 2 (3-Mode): Lo (5%) > Mid (40%) > Hi (100%)

From a 3400 mAh battery one might expect:

low: 30-35 lumen: 40 hours.
mid: 150-200 lumen: 6 hours.
max: 400-450 lumen: 2.5 hours

Hi ive never even heard of convey tbh but having a look just now and options are incredible, I could buy couple of them in a few variations to find out which one I want.

How is the reliability on them.
Forward clicky?
Regulated?

Looks like ill need to do a read up on tints and bins again, so much has changed so fast, if you take your finger off the pulse for a couple months its all new!

I think the reason I thought about Eagletac is because I have a M3C4 neutral, only problem is its bulk. Tint, lumens, runtime and operation are perfect!

P60 hosts are what im using right now with a couple of Malkoffs. I really like the light Malkoffs put out which is why I still have them. Maybe an MD2 host with high low ring but thats getting way over budget.

Well after watching the movie Brave for the 50th time with my daughter, I assume there are a lot of bears in Scotland ;) But if there aren't, wouldn't you want something light and small if you're taking a long walk? Olight S-20 is very different from what you might be looking for, but you might want to check it out. Long runtimes on an 18650. Very simple UI. I have one, as well as a Catapult -- no question which one I'd be taking on a 3 hour walk :)

Edit: just looked at Poppy's Convoy suggestion. Interesting. Cheaper than Olight as well.

I've had mine for less than a year and have not had any issues. I have never read a negative comment about them other than the S2 series get hot quickly when pushed to 2800 ma.

Oh... I have not seen any flickering of PWM, so I guess it is the other type of regulation.

I have a Maglite 4D with a malkoff xpg drop-in for this purpose. You get 12 hours at full output 260 lumens then a long taper of declining output.

HA ha Brave is fictional, there are no bears in Scotland, in fact no human threat in the wild really.

Ive always wanted malkoff mag drop in but that would just be for me, a bit big for taking on long walks.
