Recommended Li-Ion 123 charger considering my needs?

Hi!

After having said several times I only like AA flashlights, I caved in and ordered a VB-16 which runs on 2 123 Li-ion's.. :)

I'll get it with a DSD charger and a set of 2 unprotected 123's, and ordered 2 extra protected 123's.

After reading up on 123/Li-Ion's on CPF I'm doubting if I really want to use the DSD. Several people mention it not being a great charger, which bothers me, especially considering the safety aspects of Li-Ion.

But I do want the shiny! So here's my question:

What would be the best recommended charger? Keeping the following in mind:
- Safety first. It should have a very low chance of overcharging, even if I forget the thing for a day.
- Good performance and reliability. That means charging to a good capacity, and not breaking after a few months.
- Good with cells of any specs, not just one brand/type.
- I don't intend to use it for anything but charging 123's. So something that fits those cells well.
- I live in Europe: must be 220V. Plug is less important, can use an adapter.
- Sensible price. Around 20$ is fine, around 40$ can be worthwhile for a -good- unit, over 50$ It's gonna have to sing and dance :)

I know the light also takes Li-Ion AA size, but I prefer sticking with one type of cell, so 123 all the way.

I'm looking for suggestions of which model to choose, including a description of why it is a good model.

An indication of price, and where to buy it cheaply (keeping in mind shipping price to the Netherlands) is much appreciated too.
I like DX a lot, but don't know if they have anything up to spec.

Of course if you think the DSD is more then enough and can argue it, feel free to!

I found a lot of info in the old threads too, but they tend to sometimes give conflicting information, and they may have been outdated by the coming of new charger models.

Thanks!

Ultrafire WF-139 which can be found here
I've seen that model recommended a lot yes :)

But how does it compare to say the Pila IBC? (Pricey, but if it's really good, oh heck :) )
And will it be ok with unprotected cells (since I'll get some with the light)?
What if I accidently forget it and leave it on? (Know thy self.. :) )

And what about the unnamed (does that thing have a number?) charger from AW ?

I wasn't sure about the DSD either and have now been using for a couple of weeks with both protected R123s and unprotected cells. It's doing a great job. No safety worries here and I haven't heard of any safety issues at all with it. Anyone else?

The WF-139 is a better charger than the DSD, but it is not recommended for unprotected cells, as it can continue to trickle charge them beyond 4.2v if they are left on the charger after the light goes green. It is OK for protected cells, but this is because the cell's own protection circuit stops it going above 4.2v.

It is not wise to rely 100% on a cell's own protection circuit to prevent overcharging. The circuit could be damaged if the cell was dropped, and the damage would not necessarily be obvious.

The Pila IBC charger is definitely the one to go for.

Pila does sound great :) And it's the -only- decent alternative I've found on the forums, thus far. Anyone else have suggestions though ?

Note that besides safety it's also convenience, I want a charger that I can trust and leave alone, or at least as much as possible.

Any suggestions on where to look for the Pila for a decent price? No idea what it costs yet even :)
Keep in mind shipping to Europe/Netherlands.

I'm afraid I don't know of a EU stockist. BugOutGear (USA) has them, but as you say, shipping adds a lot to the cost.

BTW, welcome to CPF, and you have done well with your research and reading.

That's a shame! I'll have to dig a bit, may by I'll find something anyhow.

Thank you! pleasure to be here.

Hehe! Well, I need to do -something- to keep me entertained at work :)

For my NiMh's I've got a Charge Manager 2020 I bought a while back :D Way too expensive, and don't want to do that again, but it is very decent, except for a few exceptional cases where it can make the wrong decision.

Well, I got my Pila IBC in :D

And realized RCR123's don't fit like that.. ^_^
Looking at:

It seems I only need a spacer to fix that tho, right ? :)
Will probably look for a 18650 too anyways, which will fit :)

Now if only I had an actual flashlight to try 'm in.. ^_^
VB-16 Delayed horribly by DX :)
But, should be finally on it's way :) Hopefully ^_^

Any hints on using it ?
Already figured out:
- Don't use for cells under 600mah (smaller then CR123, it'll go BOOM!).
- Don't use for cells over 18650 in size.
- 18650 will take around 3 hours, which is fine for me :)

So now I need to go look for a decent way to get spacers :)
Those would get too expensive to ship from the US ;)

AW used to sell brass spacers for the DSD that will work fine with the IBC. Try sending him a PM. He's usually quick about replying, plus he's in Hong Kong, so shipping will be cheaper. Heck, all you need is some round bar stock made out of aluminum or brass. 15mm dia X 15mm height should be about right.

While you're waiting for spacers, you can use both of the adapters that come with the IBC to charge a single R123 cell.

AW sells spacers and dummy cells.

As to hints on using the Pila IBC, it is quite straightforward. The 3 things you list as 'already figured out' cover most of what you need to know. Just bear in mind it is almost a full 1C charge rate for an R123, so you will need to monitor cell temperature during charging, especially with old cells.

Edit: Codeman beat me to it!

Hmm, that is pretty decent shipping costs :)
Ahwell, might as well go quality all the way, think he'll get a minor order from me soon ^_^
