Reducing lumens on the E01

Is there a way? I was thinking just making a small flat resistor module, and throwing that in there. Would that screw with the flat runtime? Thanks.

shirt clip and clip it inside your t-shirt collar. Probably cuts the Lumens in half and floods them nicely depending on the shirt fabric.

It would be interesting if you drilled out the bottom of the E01's battery tube and replaced it with a volume control knob with one contact connected to the negative terminal spring and the other contact connected to the battery tube.

Just use the chapstick diffuser cap trick, and tape the sides of the cap to block the light. That will diffuse the light (making it appear dimmer), and reduce the total output. It will also smooth out the beam artifacts and make the tint look nicer.

That my friends is what we call the "Quadruple-Win" :hitit:

Sounds more like the "Win-lose" to me. The OP might be hoping to get additional runtime as well, as with the resistored McE2S switch. He might be able to double the runtime of the stock config while getting the output of the 'chapstick-cap' config, for example?

What Marduke is trying to tell you is to enjoy those guilt free lumens. What's an extra 5 hours of run-time going to cost? $.000047?

I'm not really looking for more runtime (though it won't hurt). The functionality of the Eo1 as a keychain light, for me, is compromised by it's relatively high brightness. It kinda kills my eyes everytime I use it for up close work (mostly reading and stuff). I don't want to increase the size of the light either by getting a diffuser. I tried heating up an empty prescription bottle and stamping a lens out of it which worked pretty well in reducing brightness and purplness, but I think the resistor would work better and won't fall off :/

THanks.

Try a Photon Freedom, it has variable brightness control starting at low or high. You can vary the lumens from around that of a watch backlight to as bright or brighter than the E01. The covert nose version eliminates any distracting sidespill light from the led, on lower settings runtime should be as good as the E01, it is also much smaller & lighter for keychain use too.

I wish there was an E02 that was 2-stage, like the Nitecore EZAA. Twist on for 1-3 lumens, twist more for 10 lumens. Something like that.

Here's a simpler solution.

The E01 has about 10 hours of full 10 lumens brightness (sun mode), at which time it drops into a "Moon Mode" of substantially reduced brightness. This moon mode continues for another 10 hours.

Just save your "used" AAA batteries for exclusive use in your E01. Tell your friends/relatives to save you their dead AAA's.

You will be helping the environment, while at the same time getting your 5 lumen's out of your E01.

Problem solved?

Diffuser Tip:

I went in Home Depot and found some white plastic end caps (comes in a 4 piece pack) that come in different sizes.... and found the size that fits over the led end of my EO1. (These are end caps that are designed to fit on the end of outdoor metal chairs "glides").

When I got home I used a dremel to saw the collar length in half, as I wanted a shorter cap in general..then used 800 wet/dry sand paper to smooth out rough edges.

It works like a champ to diffuse light in places like theaters in which you don't need full strength light!

You could swap the emitter for a radio shack LED #276-0017.

It results in a wider, even hotspot. The color is warmer too. Makes it more useful for certain tasks, like illuminating a restaurant menu, getting up to pee, etc.

Just be careful about leakage. I had some recently depleted Kirkland AAA's leak onto a nice teak dresser that they were sitting on for only a few weeks. An old cell could do the same inside the E01.

Are there any fenix e0's floating around? I have one, but im loathe to part with it. Those were smaller and less bright than the eo1's.

I have a natural and black E0, and I'm loathe to part with either. Great lights that I use often.

If someone twists the head just right it goes into a very low moon mode. But this can be a pain as it must be just right.

Late reply, sorry guys :/

I'm using dead batteries right now, but I hate the unpredictability of it's life. How easy is swapping? I'll do it if it doesn't require too much time. Warmer sounds nice, too.

Thanks.

Endeavour's Mako is a 2-stage AAA light that is cleaner in color (more white) and have a low low and a low high. I'm not sure what the exact lumens are, but the low is around 3 lumens and the high is around 10. It is significantly more expensive than the E01 (Mako is $115 +shipping), though. Also, its limited in production.

Good luck!
Mike
