Regalight® EDC Review - Pics Beamshots and more - NEW LED module arrived December 8th

Re: Regalight® EDC - Mini Review - Pics Beamshots and more...

Wow, 2 reports of failed switches from (presumably) overheating the first day people receive their lights. 😱

Looks like the heavy brass heatsink may actually be helping to cook the switch. What a strange design. May have to break out my spare part kit from my modding days once my light gets here. But I'm in Canada, so expect a few more days at least (choose EMS, but tracking shows it hasn't even arrived in Canada yet).

Thanks for all detailed pics and testing whc! :twothumbs
Yes it does not start of to good, I am on my second switch now, am afraid to have the light on for longer time after this, am also thinking about using another switch design, must see if some of the spare parts I have for other lights will fit this one.

Be careful when/if you are going to do some runtimes, not recommended with Li-Ion, it get very hot 🙂.

Re: Regalight® EDC - Mini Review - Pics Beamshots and more...

I think I will dismantle the first switch on mine and clean the parts, and Flitz the brass barrel just to eliminate any contact resistance issues that might be going on here.

If that fails at least I have a spare until Regalight comes up with a fix.

Re: Regalight® EDC - Mini Review - Pics Beamshots and more...

I don't have the light. But I have seen similar behaviour from switches on other lights that have a boost circuit that maximizes the output from a measly AA NiMH cell.

-The switch seem to be of a type that are typed for maybe 500 mA DC max. With the driver boosting battery draw might exceed the switch spec's several times over (or with a LiION).

-When modding 1AA lights with boost drivers I replace the switch if it's a low spec'd one. For example the Romisen RC-G2 or Ultrafire C2, when putting high boost drivers in these the switches burned within minutes.

I might be totally wrong here, but judging from the internals from that disassembled switch it looks like it's not meant very much current.

Re: Regalight® EDC - Mini Review - Pics Beamshots and more...

Hmm, did not know that, if it is so then it is really a bad desition to use such a switch in this light, hope Regalight comes with a fix to the problem.

Until then I have modded mine with a switch assembly from a NDI (first gen), the threads is the same, so fits fine, though had to use two o-rings to ad space, else it would not work, so now the rubber switch cover is almost completely flushed with the tail 😀.

Works very well, almost like it better this way 🙂.

Whc great so you can run it more than 15mins?,
now I have to look if I have any switches

BTW What are those thick o-rings for?

Have not tried yet, am a little afraid of damaging this switch two, or the LED for that matter 🙂.

The o-rings (1/2" x 11/16") is the ones I used for spacers, between the rubber switch cover and the tailcap.

Ah! I'm not suggesting you run it for long,
but I would have though the led would have blown already before the switch died,
also I read brass is not a bad conductor of heat in fact it is third best behind cooper,Alu ,so I think! as it has been said the cheap switch used is the weak link IMO.

Yes it could very well be that the switch cannot handle the current, it is absolutely the smallest switch I have ever seen in any flashlight, bad choice for Regalight to use it, if it is cheap is hard to say, but it is small 😀.

Yes brass it pretty good conductor of heat, also the reason why I first suspected that it was the heat that damaged the switch, plus I smelled burned plastic. Hope Regalight comes up with a solution, it is pretty simple to fix this matter 🙂.

Re: Regalight® EDC - Mini Review - Pics Beamshots and more...

Guys,

I'm still a noob when it comes to the actual electronics here, but I am amazed that an AA light can out-throw something with a much bigger battery.

This, of course, considering that both have been super-optimized for throw.

Wow!

Re: Regalight® EDC - Mini Review - Pics Beamshots and more...

Yes this little monster can really throw, everyone is amazed over the output when i show it.

Though the UI is troubling me, some times it will always ramp up the brightness even though I have not used for longer time (last time I had not used it for over 1 hour), now I jus keep my fingers crossed that it will not go to user defined mode when I turn it on, don't know if mine is bad.

I prefer Ni-Mh batteries, even though overall the output is about half of when using 14500, is still is very bright, and got plenty of throw for my use, plus no iritating low voltage warning comming on after shot usage.

Have contacted Regalight about the switch, and UI problems, so hope they can give me some answers and maybe improve the two (fingers crossed).

whc thanks for the updates,I don't have mine yet but already that UI is bugging me, it's not best UI that can be had at present IMO lets hope regal delivers on both

Re: Regalight® EDC Mini Review - Pics Beamshots UPDATE: Now with more throw shots...

whc: Thanks for taking the time and effort for this review! I missed the mailman on Saturday with mine, even though I was home. :sigh: Now I wish I did not!

Re: Regalight® EDC - Mini Review - Pics Beamshots and more...

I'm kicking myself for not ordering this as soon as it was available for order. Now I have to wait and watch everyone talk about it, lol. Don't you hate that? 🙂

Re: Regalight® EDC - Mini Review - Pics Beamshots and more...

Looks like a nice little monster output wise but the UI sounds like it needs improvement.

I wonder if we will see more of this kind of lights. Small head for normal use and turbohead for throw.

Thanks for the review!

Re: Regalight® EDC Mini Review - Pics Beamshots UPDATE: Now with more throw shots...

WadeF: It is hard not to order lights when they 1st are announced! At least this one shipped shortly after, not like some other lights! ( Ra clicky/SpartanianII}:shakehead

Re: Regalight® EDC Mini Review - Pics Beamshots UPDATE: Now with more throw shots...

Has anybody received any word from Regalights, or answers to any query sent? TIA

Re: Regalight® EDC Mini Review - Pics Beamshots UPDATE: Now with more throw shots...

It has been announced at the MP new light engines will be sent out within 12 days, regal says a bug was found in the circuit hence the low run times. My qeustion to that was will the power be the same to the led 1A,just a guess here maybe the ones already shipped were more than 1A has anyone tested? I wonder now if the lux figures will drop drastically with the new LE.
