I am considering a Remington 870 express synthetic stock 6+1. The model number is 5077. The Remington customer service rep could not answer my question with certainty. The online gun stores neither.

My question
Is the 6 shot magazine on this gun a single one piece longer than 4 shot magazine or is it a true 2 shot extension screwed into (and therefore able to be removed from) the more common 4 shot magazine?

I need to know because I want to be able to use a longer 28 inch barrel as well as the 18 incher that comes with the SG. The 28 is designed to be screwed down on the magazine tube at the point where the "normal" 4 shot mag ends so if the 6 shot magazine is a longer one piece "built in"
the barrel wont be able to be screwed down at that point. If this gun comes with a normal 4 shot magazine and a removable 2 shot extension then the barrel will fit with the extension holding it in place.

I am brand new to this so I hope I have made some sense here.
Thanks for your help.

I'm not a fan of the 870 so can't answer specifically, but depending upon how the mag tube is attached, switching tubes shouldn't be that big a deal. But if you go to that much trouble and expense, 2 shotguns wouldn't be much more of a reach. 870's aren't that expensive on the used market.

Avoid the Express if you can and get the normal 870 Magnum or Wingmaster. You'll be much happier and you'll be able to get far more accessories for it without having to grind off bits to make the accessories fit.

Good question. If it is weird, you might check if they have a 28" barrel designed for it specifically. May not be a problem.

Mrs. Powernoodle and I had dinner with a Secret Service agent and his wife on Saturday. I asked him if he had any fun toys in the back of his G-car like an MP-5 that I could borrow to impress the guys at the shooting range. He said his favorite "toy" is the 870. Easy to hit something with it, and it always goes boom when you want it to.

I have an 18" barrel (?) police model 870 or whatever it is, but it hasn't been out of the safe in a long time. I do know that it is no fun using slugs due the massive recoil (that puts even a Garand to shame). JMO.

if this is the one you are looking, the barrels should interchange on all 870 series shotguns, express or otherwise. These ones are just regular 4-shot tubes with an extension installed at the factory. I have both the 28 inch ribbed barrel as well as an 18.5 inch barrel which I always install on it unless I'm shooting clay. They have identical attachment points so if you have 18.5 inch barrel it will fit a 28 inch barrel designed for 870s.

I have an express in 12 ga and it works great. I have the wooden stock model and it is surprisingly comfortable to shoot, even with 3 inch slugs.

if you want to make sure you can always call the factory, they were very helpful on the phone last time I spoke with them.

270,
thats the one.
So just to confirm the extension is removable and the 28 inch barrel will fit right?
Thanks so much!

Ok,
I got it now, found a dealer with one on the shelf. He confirmed the +2 extension is removable.
Thanks Again

What Beastmaster said. You'd probably be money ahead locating a police or wingmaster 870 on the used market. You just about can't kill an 870, and if you do, there's always Wilson Combat's Remington Steal package.

FWIW, I traded out of two 870's for an 11-87 several years ago. Idon;t regret that one bit. My 870 made a day in the dove field a little less fun and full-house loads were downright uncomfortable. I can run my 11-87 like nobody's business. But, a lot of folks like the 870. It's a classic.

Thanks guys,

What is the best way to investigate the used market?
Internet? Call gun Shops? Contact gun clubs?

Also my closest FFL wants $100 for transfer fees. I thought they were much less??

Located where you are, I don't really know what to advise.

If you were in Texas, I would say gun shops, pawn shops and the ultimate source for used guns -- gun shows. There's usually a gun show of some type monthly within reasonable driving distance of where I live.

GunsAmerica.com and gunbroker.com are internet resources. www.cdnninvestments.com is a reputable dealer with a very intresting downloadable catalog.

$100 is high for FFL transfers, $15-25 is the norm here, but your state/city/whatever might require additional paperwork causing the higher price. Some dealers refuse to do the paperwork, thinking that it costs them retail business. Others, instead of refusing, charge huge fees to accomplish the same thing.

All the above being said, I do support local gun shops whenever possible. But some are so overpriced or are just jerks that I won't do business with them.

But most inportant -- join and support the NRA and your state affiliate. We wouldn't even be having this conversation if if weren't for the political power of organized gun owners.

Well I got on this kick because this gun (an American icon) for $300 seemed like a no brainer. But at $400 all in, I will bide my time until I I find a good deal. Maybe look at some used auto loaders too.

I have been an NRA member for almost 20 years and for me membership is not just about the second amendment it's representative of all individual freedoms.

Thankyou all for your input.

What will the gun be used for? Hunting? Target shooting? Home Defense?

Most pumps offer simple operation, low cost, and the option of a collapsible stock. Most semi-automatics are at least twice the cost & offer some recoil absorbtion (especially gas systems). I have used both and have had gun jams with both. I tend to lean towards semi-autos for hunting. It's one less thing to remember in the heat of putting lead in the air. If I was to buy one for home defense, it would be an 870. I think that it is or used to be the Military's shotgun, FWIW.

I agree that the $100 FFL transfer seems high. The last time I did it was a couple of years ago and I paid $50 to a dealer in SC. I'm not that familiar with New York, is a neighboring state an option for a lower fee?

Also used guns found locally will allow you to skip all of that. Just inspect the gun closely, the condition of the outside of the gun will tell you much about the harder to inspect inside portion of the gun.

Good luck and happy shoting!

I just read my weekly CDNN email specials - they've got a couple of used "very good condition" (my experience is that they understate condition) 870's for under $200. Don't sound like what you're looking for, but gives you an idea of value. One has "Orange SpeedFeed stock".

Their phone is 800 588 9500 or pm me your email address and I'll forward their email.

I looked at that web site when you first posted it and it said they only sold accessories. Not so it appears. I will call them tomorrow and ask about the 870's.
At the same time I will be calling other ffll's in the area for pricing. Surprisingly there are (not a lot but) more than I thought around here.

If I went to another state and bought there, I assume there would be no ffl fees, no sales tax, and I would just drive home with my purchase. Yes?
Of course it can cost up to $20 in bridge tolls to get off this island and back plus gas. So It is probably just as well to pay a reasonable transfer fee here.

But I like your idea of just buying used locally, since I am in no particular rush that just might be the way to go. Would have to spread the word and wait.

Hmm. They've changed that site since I was there last. You'll find the catalog interesting.

edit - I just downloaded the new catalog and find that they've gone back to their "Call for price" crap on their guns. They did that for a couple of issues early in 2007 and enough people (mostly dealers who buy from them) griped that they started publishing prices again with the last issue. Guess it's the lawyers.

Anyway, they're good to deal with ( I have no business relationship with them). And don't forget that unless you're in Texas, you won't pay sales tax.

DO NOT go to another state and buy the gun. You might want to educate yourself on current gun laws.

Federal law does not prohibit sale of a long gun to a non-resident of the state where the sale takes place if that person is otherwise qualified to buy the gun. Federal law does prohibit sale of handguns to state non-residents.

Various state or local laws may have some bearing.

fnmag,
Posting here is a part of the education process. I am not interested in doing anything that is not within the applicable laws.

BIGIRON,
My understanding is that a local ffl will collect NY sales tax on any gun they transfer. I will be following up on that too.
