Hi,

I just got myself a new SF U2. Took it out of the box and hit the switch, no light. Screwed the end cap on tight and light!!! Turned it off, switch seems sticky. Two more times and it's stuck. Now it's on all the time, I have to turn the tail cap off to turn the light off.

Did I mess up the switch in my attempt to turn it on while it was "locked out". Is there a fast fix? I wanted this light for a 9 day trip I'll be making soon. Sure would be nice to have a FULL functioning light. :(

Wow all that money spent and I still have to use my $5 light tonight to look behind the stove in an attempt to level it.:sigh:

The U2 tailcap is very easy to take apart. Look from the top....see the holes around the rubber button?....take some small needle nose or lock ring priers and insert into holes....turn to open.
Now just pull the switch apart and lube the inside...carefull not to loose any springs.
Screw back together and it should be fine.
I just got mine today and had the tailcap apart to add my tailgaurd.

Hi,

Thanks for the fast answers. I DID search for info here on my issue, but no go. Great info and link. I'll try the lube thing first, if that fails I'll pull her apart. But all tomorrow in the morning. Never start this stuff at 12:19am.

THANKS!!!

Hi,

I just oiled it up from the inside, fixed in under 30 seconds. Thanks a million guy and gals, now I have my light ready to go. I'm so thankful for the tips!!!!

May I suggest you edit your title of the thread and add something like "RESOLVED". It's really not fair for the company and everything stays on CPF.

Done, thanks again everyone.

Wow, this light is amazing, the quality of the light beam and the construction is so top end. I love it. I need another :O

When you need a light in an emergency, this will be the baby to have.

Wow. First thing is complete failure, now it's the best to have in an emergency.

Go figure.

I have *several* U2`s, and they are, in fact, my "go to" light for emergencies. Even in this age of "Seoul", it`s still hard to beat the utility and the easily-accessed brightness levels of the U2. And any tailcap "problems", in my experience, are rare and/or a pretty simple matter to fix.

I run U2`s on rechargeable 18650 batteries, so I either buy the older model U2`s that accept that battery, or else I use Leef`s great replacement 18650 U2 battery tube.

With an 18650 battery, the runtime graphs that I`ve seen indicate runtimes of over 1.5 hours on high, and over TWO DAYS on the low (yet still pretty bright) setting. It doesn`t get much better than that for such a nice light.

Best wishes!

:)

The tip on using oil to fix the U2 tailcap has been recommended several times over the last year. There has been so much Surefire bashing that these suggestions got over looked and forgotten.

No offense but if something expensive stops working 15 seconds after I get it home, you can bet I'm going to be bashing the company. Even if it was a simple fix that *I* had to do to get it to work.

Suppose people were buying new cars and many of them stopped running and "all" that the owners had to do was get under the hood and reroute some wires. You can bet the car company would send out a recall instantaneously.

Somebody spends $hundreds on a light and the company can't even lube the thing right? And then the justifiably annoyed owners who post messages about that are ridiculed here? Something's very irrational about that and it disturbs me.

I agree with the post above. Also They make a lot of flashlights. Occasionally something will get by them. The important thing to remember is they stand behind their products 100% no questions asked.

Fenix lights are somewhat cheaper, but have a 12 month warranty, 18 months if you recister on line. Anybody have warranty info on the other major players?

Thing is, U2s malfunctioning right out of the box is old news around here. A significant number of them have been DOA, right out of the box. Surefire should have issued a recall. But I guess it was more cost-effective to replace individual tailcap switches as the individual complaints came in.... Not very cost-effective for Surefire's loyal, international, customers who had to send defective models back, and then wait.... and wait.... and wait; sometimes several months before having a working U2 in their hands. (Along with paying international shipping rates to send the defective models back to Surefire).

Yeah.... Way to stand behind your Product.

Call me crazy, but here's better ways to stand behind your product....

1 - Issue a recall.

2 - Send new, working models to those customers who's lights malfunctioned right out of the box.

3 - Once a customer has paid shipping charges, to send the light back, reimburse him. Include a free case of batteries or perhaps something extra as a way of saying sorry that the customer had to go through all of that.... Especially considering how much a U2 costs, and Surefire's reputation; there's no excuse for the significant number of U2s that didn't work.... right out of the box!

While I love my E2e, E2d, L4, L5, C2, and my two G2 models; I took the U2 off of my list for "Must Have" Surefire lights. There's still a few DOA U2 models floating around. But I will admit that those who have working U2 models, often post that it's their favorite Surefire.
