Results of informal tests of Extreme Glow Sheeting

For those who are interested I have performed an informal test of Extreme Glow G.I.T. D. adhesive sheeting. (See previous post) The results are not based on any instrumentation other than my eyes so they are highly subjective. However, they did manage to prove to me that this stuff lives up to it's claims.

For this test I placed a 3" by 6" sample of Extreme Glow sheeting in a window during daylight hours until 5:00 PM. At 5:00 PM I placed the sample in a cardboard box and took it into a windowless room for evaluation. At this time, with non-dark adapted eyes, it appeared to be almost as bright as one of those Limelight electroluminescent nightlights

The following results were obtained at 2 hour intervals until bedtime and then again the following morning:

7:00 PM: Still visible to the non-dark adapted eye. Appeared about ½ as bright as it did at 5:00 PM

9:00 PM: Still visible to the non-dark adapted eye. No apparent change in brightness

11:00 PM: Still visible to the non-dark adapted eye. Slight, but perceptible decrease in brightness.

7:00 AM: (14 hours) Sample is quite visible to my dark adapted eyes. Appears as it did at 6 hours to non-dark adapted eyes. Upon getting used to the morning light I could not see the sample without waiting in the dark for a couple of minutes.

In addition to this test I also put a small piece of the sheeting on my home brew turquoise LED bedside flashlight and charged it for about 15 seconds with my white LED bedside flashlight. Everytime I woke up, this ½" by ¼" piece was glowing quite brightly all night long. I highly recommend this stuff to everyone who has a need to find things in the dark.

I hope this info is helpful to anyone who has been curious about this product.

Thanks for the report. Sounds like good stuff. I was originally only going to order some glow bracelets and necklaces for the kids, but now I'll try an order of the glow sheets as well.

The reason I was so enthused in
my original post-"Best Bright Glow", was the very reasonable
cost of this material.
Over the months of using every
search engine I could find(about 10), the only other stuff had to
be bought by the lb.and had 2 be
MIXED and painted on in several
coats.
After trying 2 of the quality Industrial mixes (@$36.a lb.),

I concluded that this extremely
easy to use stuff was just as
good!
-for techheads,-it uses as an
activator: strontium/copper/europeum-just
like the professional ones do..
I'm still "scratching my head"
trying to figure out how they do
it with such very THIN material.
I have many thicker zinc sulfide
types and they just (pardon my
language) "don't hold a candle" to this stuff...

-any real chemists out there..?

KenBar,

Your experience is in line with what I found out about this stuff while doing some research on the web. Its light output is temperature dependent. But, I also found that it seemed to glow as well all night with a 15 second exposure to my white LED flashlight as it did sitting in the window all day. Great stuff!

I think these types of materials have only a limited ability to absorb energy, so putting them in the sun all day is probably overkill. That actually works to our advantage since we won't need to put much effort into energizing it.

Glow Material Update
Now have tested blue sheeting (informally), and noted three characteristics.-in comparison to the orig. green...
1. initially not as bright as the green.
2. Takes noticeably longer to charge up.
3. outlasts the green in glow duration.
-amazing stuff...

Yet further development on G.I.T.D. material
I'm "going on"about this b-cause
of the learning process....
Today came a package of some material that makes the stuff that I commented on earlier look inferior.
frown.gif
(have to admit it)... It's called "Alien Skin", and it's glow effect is truly mindboggling.

Yes, it's considerably more expensive, (not exorbitant) but I am in negotiations with this supplier to get a lot more.
p.s-I'm almost as impressed with this stuff as I am with my new E2.-(yuk-yuk) -just thought some of you should know...
-nope, "Skin" won't replace the LED, but woooow.

Doug,

I have to admit that I was definitely a bit skeptical about the claims that the Alien Skin people made for their product. What makes this stuff superior, brightness, duration of glow, or both? What color does it glow?

This material is thicker, and glows bright green.
(about 40% brighter after 1 hour andbest I can tell, duration is probably increased by about 20%)
funny thing....-it's preference
for charge-up is white LEDs-
not UV.

huh?

It sounds like a material designed specifically for us "LEDHeads"*

I wonder if it's thicker because it has a reflectorized layer behind the phosphorescent layer. That could explain it's greater brightness somewhat.

I also allowed for thickness in the many comparisons I did, but even by increasing the thickness of the other two materials, and nothing else that I tried could get them that much closer to the new material.
FYI-the blue stuff did better than the orig. green, but still couldn't match the "Skin".

note: all three of these materials are VERY persistent in
their G.I.T.D. ability, but especially the latter two...
-my lady is a little bit afraid of this stuff

About ten years ago I remember buying some phosphorescent powder which came in a small sealable plastic bag. (You know those gimic bags like sneez powder--pepper, and fake blood. This was the only cool thing in that range). This stuff was extremely bright when charged with an incandescent light. I had some of the adhesive glow sticker at the time and the powder was much brighter. Has anyone seen this stuff before?

We put it on our faces to glow in the dark and also mixed it with glue to paint it on things.

pwell,
The great quality powders are usually sold by the kilo, but I did find 1 oz. quantities (in 5 Colors) @: www.neoglow.com
Of course, there is plenty of cheap"zinc-sulfide"like on those stickers you had, but it only lasts a few minutes...
I am trying to locate a source for the powerful pre-mixed stuff called Kryptonight.(small 4 bottle kit-$22.-2 colors)
(the one website is still up, but the seller is on hiatus.)

whoa! I'm going to have to resurect this thread from April -

Anybody know of a source for the Alien Skin? I can't seem to dig one up. Any updates on the various materials mentioned here? Anybody have a bunch extra they'd like to sell/swap?

Thanks,
