[Review] Maglite ML300L 6D - worth it in 2025?

Candle Power Flashlight Forum

Help Support CPF:

I have an incan 6D from 1982 and aside from the output have always found it to be too long and cumbersome for me. I think the sweet spot for the ML300L is the 3D or 4D. I purchased a ML300L 4D in 2024 and have come to really like it but I do prefer the 3D size. Either way, take a look at this evaluation of the ML300L 4D and 6D.

Maglite Runtime Sorcery (ML300L 6D) and 4D Version

Not 'on-topic', but the talking horse told me I should not link to material on other flashlight sites. I personally don't mind and think it's appropriate sometimes (as in this case); but just an FYI;-)

I have found conflicting information on maglite.com regarding the specs of the 6D ML300L. In the table it lists the specs shown in a previous post, yet in the text description, it mentions having 1,000 lumens. I'm thinking that they have used the same circuitry as the 4D in the 6D, and just forgot/overlooked updating the specs table to the new specs. See below:

(The description)

The Maglite ML300L 6D Cell LED Flashlight is a powerhouse tool built for serious performance. With an extended runtime of over 200 hours on eco mode, it’s one of the most reliable long-lasting flashlights available. At first I thought that maglite had accidentally cut and pasted some text from the 4D description into the 6D description, but the experience of a member in a previous post getting higher brightness than normal seems consistent with an upgrade. Perhaps maglite didn't make a big deal of the upgrade because they are wanting to showcase the 4D over the 6D, to possibly avoid criticism that the 6D should be brighter than the 4D. Or, it could be that they still had some of the older 6D stock with the lower specs still in inventory, and decided to slow walk the upgrade publicity until the old stock was depleted. Who knows what is going on at maglite these days?

My 6D ML300 is definitely brighter than my ML300LX 3D, which is supposed to be 746 lumens. The 6D seems much closer to the 1002 lumen rated 4D ML300L.

Still, I think the 6D is more of a collector's item/conversation piece than it is a practical flashlight. I find the 4D ML300L, 3D ML300LX, 3C ML50LX, along with the 2C ML25 to be much more practical. The 6D is too big, heavy (running NiMH or alkaline D cells) and poorly balanced for use strictly as a flashlight - seems that most people get them for other considerations?

I agree

In 1984 I received a 5D or 6D MagLite, as a gift after graduating Medic School

I did carry it for a while, but it became quickly apparent that it was NOT practical to carry at work, and I changed out to my 3D Smoke-Cutter

Not long after (1985), I found the StreamLight SL20, which became my work light, along with a MagLite Mini-Mag

I do have (1) 4D ML300L, but it has been replaced by NEBO BAT LIGHTS (and I was a NEBO "hater", before finding these) which are actually longer then the 4D

I have found the NEBO BAT LIGHTs are MUCH better balanced, and MUCH easier to carry/use, then the 4D Mags (at least for me)

I will include a picture of the NEBO with a 4D, 3D, and 2D Mag

The size of whackin' stick flashlights is interesting. I feel like there's a sweet spot around size of a 3D-4-5D Mag, and it's clumsy once you go over that. All the other brands (other than a few random examples popping up for a second) discontinued their >5D lights by the mid '80s, so Mag has been left by default with their 6D as the biggest flashlight on the market since. I'm guessing a lot of sales come from that fact alone, rather than it being a great defensive choice.

I'd probably go with a 4D if I needed a club, personally. Or better a 5C.

I would kindly suggest, that if you're lookin' for such a light, that you look at the NEBO BAT LIGHT

From my limited experience with them, they are Far and Away a better choice for that, over ANY MagLite

Just my experience, so do with that what you wish

I tell ya, despite my Mag-love, anybody that would pay to put 6 D batts in a flashlight in this day and age needs to know there's other options.

HOWEVER, just for the aesthetics to freak people out, I would totally do a PVC adaptor sleeve job and run it on two protected 18650's or 26650's.

3-4D is optimal for swinging, 6d with alkaline is too heavy to swing fast. However it will be more effective if you have to defend against a bat, then you want extra length and weight, especially it is effective paired with military shovel in other hand, when against a baseball bat. The guy was really surprised, when he saw those 2 objects, and decided he has shown me his bat, i appreciated the beauty of it, and it was time to put it back in a car and drive away.

In a sh*t hits the fan situation I am grabbing my 6D ML a big sack of D cells and heading for the hills. The not thing I actually do NOT like about it is that it isn't offered in Mags grenade pattern grip which is awesome btw. In a WROL situation for near unbeatable run times.

Sporting goods section in Walmart, black hockey tape. Nice and grippy and doesn't leave a sticky residue. Back in the day I used to put electrical tape over paracord on my 4D for a grippy section.
