Review: Sofirn SC21 Pro with LH351D 5000K

The light arrived in Advanced stepped mode with the following defaults in Anduril 1.

Low mode of 3 lumens,
7 ramping steps, highest is 540 Lumens
Double click from off gives ceiling of 540 lumens (note my lumens meter is homemade, your results may vary)
Double click from ON at any level gives Turbo 860 Lumens
Triple clic from on changes from stepped mode to ramping mode
the lowest mode in ramping is 0.1 lumens, ramping up goes to 540 lumens, and a double click gives 860 lumens
Triple clic from off gives battery voltage

6 click from off goes to muggle mode
low 4 lumens, top of ramp 250 lumens, no turbo

I then did 6 click to return to Advanced mode and checked thermal calibration.

thermal config was reading 28, but my IR thermometer said 34C, so I recallibrated the thermal config to 34C, using these instructions.

I then tested thermal step down from Turbo, tailstanding the light. After 1 minute the light was still over 600 Lumens. imo the Thermal Management is Excellent. The light was not too hot to touch, and after turning off, a temp check gave 45C. From off, the light cooled down rapidly. The heat transfer out of the host seems excellent. If the light is handheld while in Turbo, the output is even more consistent.

Im very impressed at the sustainable output of this light. I also like the small size and form factor. There are LEDs under the button, that glow green, to locate the light. The button light arrived set to the low mode.. 7H from off will advance the button light settings in a 4 step cycle. More details in the manual:

There is a magnet in the tail, it works very well including to hold the light sideways. There is a 2 way pocket clip that is nice and deep carry, and can also work as a Hatlamp. The package includes a USB C charging cable that plugs directly into a port on the head of the light. The button light glows red during charging and changes to Green when the battery is full. Charging works perfectly and the Voltage reported by triple click matches my DMM. Im very impressed with the battery voltage check feature, and the charging feature.

I also like that Anduril has built in LVP, so no need for protected cells. Im using the 800mAh cell provided in the Full Set purchase from Sofirn, that includes the light, plus a battery. It is a button top, and I always recommend buying the battery with the light. The price of the battery is very low, and it is very convenient to receive a light ready to use, with all accessories, including the USB C the charging cable. The battery arrives at about 3.6V, it is important to charge it fully for best results.

The SC21 Pro switch button requires about 2.5 pounds of pressure to turn on the light. For reference a FWAA switch triggers with less than 1 pound of pressure. imo the SC21 Pro switch seems very unlikely to be turned on unintentionally. I have to press the switch, deeply and very deliberately, or nothing happens. The SC21 Pro is sustainably 2x Brighter than a FWAA, and the same length.

I like that the SC21 Pro beam is symmetrical, with no rings or artifacts. It is also moddable to Nichia 219b and 519a, and still produces an excellent beam, even with a dedomed.519a. It is a pleasure to find a light whose reflector is compatible with multiple High CRI LED options.

This light is a complete turnkey solution for someone wanting to use a light with 16340 LiIon, without any need to buy a separate charger. I recommend it as a handy, small, High CRI light, that is very versatile. For example, it is a good light to keep in the car, for camping, tailgating, or just to change a tire. The magnet is convenient for use on metal car surfaces, and the included charge cable means the light can be charged in the car, no need to take the battery out, nor to take the light out of the car.

The deep carry pocket clip is very useful imo, it is easy to EDC such a small light, and the clip doubles as a handsfree hatlamp, which I really like. imo the light is also good on the nightstand, with its 0.1 lumen low, it is easy to find my way, walking through the house in the dark of night. Without being too bright, so I can get back to sleep easily.

Thumbs up on this little SC21 Pro.. It has a winning combination of features, for many different applications. Makes a great gift, to myself, or others.. ;-)
 
I have an older, non Anduril SC21 & while I like Anduril UI I don't think a light this size really gains any real benefit from having it. The standard SC21 UI with its shortcuts to ML, turbo & strobe + a memory that can only be one of only 3 well spaced levels, Anduril steps or ramping doesn't add much & the small battery limits the benefit of the other special modes offered. Either way Pro or not the SC21 is a real performer & a solid deal.
 
Thanks for your thoughts, Im glad youre enjoying your SC21 Mini. Although I agree that simple stepped UI can be perfectly functional, it requires more forethought than a Ramping UI.

With a 4 mode light we have to guesstimate which step is suitable for our application. This usually means adapting to a little too much or a little too little light, for a given distance and application.

otoh, with a Ramping UI, it is not necessary to invoke any mental overhead, accessing memorized info about the mode steps and spacing of any given light.

With a Ramping UI, selecting the right amount of light is much more intuitive and fluid. For me, Anduril Ramping is a real game changer, I now avoid buying lights with stepped modes.

Not only can Anduril be set up to emulate a stepped UI, it can also be used as a Ramping UI. I see no problem with the small battery size, I find it very convenient. Im not a blinky user, but there are plenty of them for people that like electronic candle, bike strobe, party strobe, tactical strobe.. etc. And they dont have to be battery killing functions, they can be used at low light levels..

In any case, worrying about battery life is not an issue for me, since I stopped using disposables. With rechargeables, when a light runs low on power, I just swap and recharge.

Plus Anduril has built in LVP, and a Battery Check feature, that is super convenient. Honestly, I dont think there is another UI out there, that is as flexible and full featured as Anduril.. it can do pretty much everything any other UI can do, and people that like multi click UIs can click to their hearts content. Or they can simply ramp up and down, and forget about stepped UIs altogether ;-)

No wrong choices, just more of them.. lol
 
I do not Love the LH351d either, but since I learned to change LEDs, I like lights that use LH351d because the LED uses the same footprint and solder pads as the Nichia 219b and 519a. So I can reuse the stock mcpcb and have no fittment issues.

Here is a modding album, it shows the steps, tools, and supplies needed to mod a Sofirn SP10 Pro, the process is the same for the SC21 Pro. If you, or anyone reading this, ever want to learn to swap LEDs, I will be happy to mentor you through the process.
 
The SC21 Pro is easily moddable. The bezel on mine was not glued.

the Ramping UI works perfectly with the Red LED.. from super low, to super bright, and all points inbetween..
 
My older SC21 will run on a 123 just doesn't reach the same output levels as w/16340

The light says it has Anduril 2, I'm not sure.
I use the "simple UI" as it seems fine with one exception "mode memory". It works when I am using the light but if I set it down for a few minutes it goes to low. I can toggle between ramp/step with 3 clicks and from the videos I can find it seems like it is version 1?

All I would like to know, is there an easy way to get mode memory set to the last level used indefinitely in the simple UI?

correct the light ships with Anduril 1, not Anduril 2, despite what the print info says

fwiw, there is no simple mode as in Anduril 2,
in Anduril 1 it is called muggle mode and has very few features that cannot be changed, but the memory style should be inherited from advanced mode iirc..

to set the automatic memory I think you first need to be in advanced mode

another quirk.. the temperature sensor needs to be calibrated. I use the manual when I do that too.

Thanks for the info. I bought it from Amazon which states Anduril 2. I was able to verify using the 4c lockout and 2h tricks.

Having that verified I found a Version 2 pdf flow chart which helped me to turn on automatic memory.
That migrates to the Simple UI and it is perfect now.

Can I ask why you swap out the Samsung LH351D? I like it.
 
Yes, I understand that the ad copy "says" Anduril 2, but afaik, they actually use Anduril 1. In any case, Im glad you found a way to set automatic memory.

One way to tell the difference from Anduril 1 to Anduril 2:
Click 4 times to lock it and then unlock it again. If it turns on immediately, you're on Anduril 2, if it stays off it's Anduril 1.

Another way to tell:
To check which version of Anduril is on a light, clic 6 times from off. If it blinks, it's Andúril 1 and now in muggle mode, if not it's Andúril 2 and nothing happened.

Another difference, how to set manual or automatic memory
Anduril 1, starting with the light ON
- 5 clicks: Activate manual memory and save the current brightness.
- 5 clicks, but hold the last click: Go back to automatic memory.

Anduril 2, starting with the light ON
- 10C: Activate manual memory and save the current brightness.
- 10H: Ramp extras config menu.
- Item 1: Disable manual memory and go back to automatic memory.
(doesn't matter what value the user enters at the prompt)

glad you like the stock LED

I like Nichia 219B and 519a, better than LH351d because they have higher Red CRI. Personal preference.

You can see in this group of spectrum plots, that the LH351d, lower left, has a shorter Red Bar. It also has greener tint, quantified as duv 0.0061 which is above the BBL, by contrast the 219b tint duv is -0.0055:

I will say that the 5000K Lh351d in a recent FrazLabs qt is nicer than the 4000K(?) Lh351d in an older Zebralight SC64 LE; less green when you are looking for it, or comparing it with an emitter that renders more red. And the dedomed 5700K 519a in an Emisar D1 mini pocket thrower is so close to the pinnacle of ideal...
