The MAG Charger with a Welch-Allyn 01160 super bulb, 1/2D Powerstreams and UCL was the outright winner. No other flashlight in the group even came close to the MAGWA in the spot department while the Streamlight SL-20X body with SL-35X reflector rated at 450 lumens gave the MAGWA a little bit of a workout when it came to flood.

Here are the contestants:

I charged each flashlight or used new batteries for the lux reading tests and here are the results:

Here are some gratuitous garage shots of the beam patterns a la S4MadMan. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Some remarks:

-Mr. Bulks L3C, the lone LED, an LIII is a tremendous thrower.

-Streamlight's TL-3 is the brightest performer for its size.

-I was a bit disappointed with the Tiger Light FBOP. Though it performed well in the subjective tests, the lux meter did not agree with it. I may have a less then optimal reflector but it is what it is.

-The Streamlight SL-35X reflector is very impressive. It should be as it's rated at 450 lumens.

-The big daddy, King-of-the-Hill, the MAGWA01660 is just tremendous. Once you have seen this 550+ lumen flashlight, all others pale in comparison.

I will try to add a picture of all these flashlights with beam shots at 200' which will give a much better indication of how the MAGWA01160 is head and shoulders above the competition.

Dan,

Great review! I just love that Garage Door "Beauty Shot" Would you be able to pull in the results of your earlier testing of the MagCharger with the stock bulb and pack? I think that would be useful for us to see for comparison.

I'm very pleased the WA01160 is getting such a large audience. It is truly a monster.

I've gotta think seriously about sending you my MoMag to test. MagWA versus MoMag? That would be a fun match up. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif At the very least, you'd be taking better beamshots than my crappy ones.

Re: REVIEW: Super Hand-Held Flashlights with Pictu

This is one of most informative methods of flashlight testing that I've seen on CPF!

Those are really useful beamshots. Thanks S4MadMan /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Thanx again for the great review Dan and the awesome shots...

Re: REVIEW: Super Hand-Held Flashlights with Pictu

There should be some kind of award for this work. You've answered 1,000 questions in one post.

Re: REVIEW: Super Hand-Held Flashlights with Pictu

Excellent job S4MadMan! Being a newbie, I'm still trying to get a good handle on brightness and throw. Those pictures really help.

Re: REVIEW: Super Hand-Held Flashlights with Pictu

S4MadMan - Great review! Thanks for putting in the time and effort. Super job, well done with the photos. What generation is your Tigerlight? I'm assuming it must be an early one. I own both the TL3 and the Tiger, and either you have a super TL3 or a weak Tiger. Both of my Tigers trounce my TL3, (D3 and M3). Thanks again for a great review! --Tim

Re: REVIEW: Super Hand-Held Flashlights with Pictu

Excellent use of time S4! Great, very useful comparison - educational data and beam shots. Thank you for your effort.

Re: REVIEW: Super Hand-Held Flashlights with Pictu

seems like the 1160 is the whitest one too. Probably the mfr's sacrifice brightness for a longer bulb life?

edited to clarify

Re: REVIEW: Super Hand-Held Flashlights with Pictu

Great review. Do you have any plans on commenting on the runtime of the rechargables? In particular, the difference between the TigerLight and the MAG.

Re: REVIEW: Super Hand-Held Flashlights with Pictu

Thanks all, just trying to help out the CPF community. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Wilkey, I think the MAGMO vs MAGWA01160 would be a good comparison as the MAGWA handily beat out the VL 1.5MCP:

LitFuse: LOL! I do my flashlight testing after midnight so I won't disturb anyone. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Blinded: good idea. I think I will create a beamshot database...I'll keep you posted. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

KartRacer: I believe I have a Gen3 TL. I'm in the process of purchasing a new reflector for it. And yes, the TL is brighter than the TL-3. It's not that apparent in the pictures because it's only 100' away. That's why I want to take some comparison shots at 200' which will make the differences more readily apparent.

Nascar: The MAGWA01160 runs consistently over 45+ minutes. Not sure about the TL.

Re: REVIEW: Super Hand-Held Flashlights with Pictu

S4MadMan - Cool, I'd be interested to see if you get higher readings with the new Tiger reflector. BTW - According to TigerLight the runtime is 1.1 hours (66 minutes), my findings have been very close (within 5 minutes). --Tim
