I think(hope) my next light will be a Roar of Pelican. It fits my price range and I think the output will be sufficient
this is a list I compiled, any idea where I could get things cheaper? I don't mean to sound like a broken record, but I don't know where I could get the rechargeables and how I could recharge them.

ROP Mod List of Parts:
Maglite 4D $20
borofloat glass from flashlightlens.com 52.1mm for Mag D cell $6
cammed MOP $25
batteries(rechargeables) $27
bulb #3854 w/ 11w (lo output) and 24w (hi output) $8
total costs $86

well, any comments would be great, I want to hopefully start it sooner than this summer, but right now school is extremely overpowering (read: parents are obsessive about my grades) Any help and tips you could give would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much,

I think I might go with this config

ROP Mod List of Parts:
Maglite 2C $18
borofloat glass from flashlightlens.com 52.1mm for Mag D/C cell $5.5
cammed MOP $25
batteries x2 18650 unprotected (rechargeables) $25.57
bulb #3854 w/ 11w (lo output) and 24w (hi output) $8
total costs $82.07

Same combo I built (now sold) and im now waiting for another one (RoP mini) Running the unprotected cells is fine as long as you understand the dangers. Make sure you swap out the cells as soon as you see dimming.

I don't think the protected cells cost much more these days -- might be worth it for the peace of mind. Didn't see a charger on your list, think they're normally $15 but I think I saw the same Ultrafire for even less somewhere.

EDIT -- hold on, apparently the protected 18650s won't fire up a ROP high bulb, the startup current is too high. Back to unprotected or NiMH, I guess.

IIRC the cammed reflector is $30 from FiveMega if you aren't buying a battery holder at the same time. Camless is $25. I really like the cammed reflector though...

ooooookay. I included the price of the charger in the battery price. should I buy more than 2 of the 18650's? btw, what's the difference btwn a cammed reflector or camless? I was looking at a site that said how to build a ROP and it said it ran at around 1150 "before optical losses" is that plausible? that would be wicked sweet! I might pick up the protected ones, but I will see.
thanks a ton, guys!

ok, thanks bridgman! I've heard that ROP on low is around 300 still, so I think that would be good! What do you mean by only the new C cells?

Thanks so much!!!

My first light was an ROP in a 4D body. I used 6 1/2Ds. That thing ran for quite a while.
I got them here...

I used the 1/2D4000HPJs Not cheap, and I still have a bunch of them. But boy to they run.

thanks molite!
hmm, this seems more plausible than a C3, hopefully I'll get started this summer...

Double click = just have to press the mag switch on-off-on to get the bulb to light.....won't go into the technical detail why. I don't like to type very much.:)

Good Luck, they make a very easy and quite effective M*g mod.

You sound like a nice young flashaholic.
I'm sure some of us might donate some parts to the cause.
I have an extra DSD and pelican hi low bulbs for the cost of shipping.
Maybe someone can donate bats?
Then you need the 2c host and reflector and lens.

I think I can get the 2C maglite @ a local store. I went to GiJoe's and they only had AA's and 2-5 D cells. They did have an anti-roll kit which is *imperative* for this. I cannot have this thing rolling around.
thanks for the offer molite, but I think I'd have to pay for something, eg. pay for a dsd 18650/rcr123 charger and get a couple batts free, something like that. I want to get parts from as few online retailers as possible, so I'd need to group where I get my parts from.
also, no offense, but your first line, molite, about the "nice young flashaholic" thing kinda rubbed me the wrong way

thanks guys, have a good one!
