Thanks go to Mr. Bulk for sharing this 5W Royal Blue Luxeon with me.

This is built into a blue 2D MagLite, which uses 3C cells to drive a DC/DC converter to power the 5W Luxeon.

This thing is incredibly bright! It actually is painful to look at its reflection off a wall. Very deep blue/violet, makes almost anything glow.

Outside, it performs very strange. At long distances (300ft) it looks like a white light. But shine it on anything closer and you get this intense blue/violet glow back. It will make things glow that are very, very, far away.

The camera doesn't capture the intense blue/violet color of the light in the center spot here, but makes it look white in the picture. But believe me, it is very, very violet blue in color.

You can charge glow items from all the way accross the room in just a few seconds. If you like glow in the dark stuff, this is really quite remarkable how bright it will make things glow from 50ft away, even after the light is turned off.

So, I present my first 5W mod, the Royal Blue fire breathing Dragon .........

Wow!! That looks really cool.

Is that centre beam effect in the bottom photo an accurate depiction? Are you using the Mag reflector to focus it?

Graham

Cool Kevin!

I like the choice of color on the mag too. 🙂 What did you use for optic/ reflector if I may be so bold?

Hi guys, this uses just the stock Mag reflector to focus the beam.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Amazing is right!. Have you shot that thing at AlienSkin or other high performance G.I.D. materials yet??

And yes, even the reflection of the Royal Blue beam of the measly 1 watt R.B. kinda hurts the old eyeballs.

nice work.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Yes, I got some skin from Bushman a few months ago, and one of the things I used it for was to place a small strip on the downstairs door lock so I could tell if it was locked at night. Never really glowed that long to be really useful. But with this I can just point at it from across the room and it lights right up real bright. No more wondering if the door is locked, I don't even have to get up and check any more when I head for bed.......

Nice!

I noticed most (all?) of the 5W mods/builds are using reflectors and high-dome emitters. Since you guys are getting excellent results with this, would you say the high-dome is much much better for reflectors than the low-dome is?

I tried a low-dome with a TurtleLight reflector, and got poor results. Even the low-dome test fitted on a 3D mag reflector was less than impressive.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">A LD with reflector will not focus right, but with a suitable reflector a HD will. I've come to prefer the HD w/reflector over the collimator for most purposes.

Oh, and NICE blue light you've got there Lambda!!!

i never wanted a royal blue luxeon before, but i admit i want one now. reminds me of the delta force movies where they 'blackout' their lights or put purple gels on them. how functional is it as a real flashlight? how hard are you driving it?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">No, no, this has a new DC/DC design and is my first 5W mod. I need to play with, er, test this properly for run time, reliability, etc. This is the test bed for the white 5Ws that should show up any time now......
